Aren’t there hooks in the classroom?

Huh? Hooks? Definitely not!

Do any classrooms past kindergarten have hooks? I'm asking honestly. I've never seen them in any classrooms, but my kids have only been in FCPS since they were in 3rd, 5th, and 6th grades. I don't recall them ever having hooks in any of their classrooms. I've taught in three middle schools in FCPS, as well as one high school, and can confidently say that middle and high schools do not have hooks.

All elementary rooms have a coat closet area with hooks for backpacks and coats and lunches.

Do Crossfield, Oak Hill, and Lees Corner? Those are the only schools my kids have attended.

I can tell you Waples Mill does not, even in K. There are movable coat racks outside each classroom.

They all get chairs, right? Why can’t they hang the backpacks on the chair backs? Or keep them in a corner? If the teacher is tripping over backpacks, he or she can make a rule about where they go in his or her classroom where they won’t be a tripping hazard.

Exactly.

And the kids store their coats/backpacks/lunches in the coatrack which is right outside the room and can access it if necessary.

Because if you put the backpacks on the back of a chair, the chair tips over if there is any significant amount of weight in the backpack. And the backpack is bulky enough that a middle school sized child or teacher can't fit between two chairs when they are in table groups. There is no space for 30+ backpacks "in a corner" of a standard size classroom in most FCPS middle schools.

I'm honestly not sure why this is a not a thing at the hs level...perhaps they don't move around the room as much as in middle school when we try to plan lots of activities that involve getting up and moving around? It's as much about the kids not tripping as the teacher. I'm unclear as to why they are building classrooms smaller when they renovate vs. larger. I am in a newer building and the rooms are tiny given the number of students per class.

This makes sense. It should be student choice. Now kids will be forced to go to their lockers all the time to get materials. So ridiculous.

Someone did a study some years ago and it said that lockers were the source of bullying, drugs, truancy, everything bad so they got rid of them in a lot of middle schools.

Even in high school we have things that look like a kennel instead of lockers.

Lockers or no lockers MS age kids need to be managing their own stuff through the day.

There is no space. There are too many bodies in the room. Making a rule about where the backpacks go doesn't make more space.

PE lockers but not regular

I dont see how they would have time between classes to go to their lockers.

My lid has a locker but doesnt use it. With the bulky laptop and notebooks for each class and lunch and a metal water bottle, his backpack is absurdly stuffed full and heavy. The coat gets stuffed in there too.

So do kids carry/wear jackets all day?

Mine always did, when his school was under renovation. Even when it wasn't, there isn't a lot of time between classes to visit a locker and he said they were mostly used by kids who had sports or other activities after school and needed a place to stash equipment.

Why would they need to visit their locker between classes if all they are storing in there is their jacket?

I know this is an old thread, but Key does now assign lockers. Students aren’t allowed to carry backpacks from class to class.

They were also the source of much flirtation and socialization and all the good things about school.

My kids go to Crossfield, their classrooms have hooks/cubbies.
