Is Vienna snobby?

Anonymous
We commute via train to DC from Vienna. We ended up here after bailing from DC when we had kids. We were priced out of Arlington and wanted good schools and low crime. We’ve been super happy in Vienna. We live a short drive to the Station and the train commute is easy, you always get a seat and it’s a straight shot as we work on the Orange line. A shorter commute is always nice but Vienna isn’t a bad spot to be even if you work in DC, though it might depend exactly where in DC. I don’t find it snobby. There is a lot of money here but you often have no idea until you see someone’s house because they don’t act differently. I’ve been floored a few times going to kid bday parties.

Absolutely snobby. They typically dine out at the world famous Vienna Inn. Virginia's answer to California's French Laundry.

Uhh, Bethesda ain't first tier friend.

Why is everyone putting down Vienna? It is a wonderful town filled with affluent families and is close-in to DC.

People love living in Vienna, so as long as you get involved whether that be through your kids schools, activities with other adults your age, etc you’ll be fine. Many people grow up in Vienna and move back. It has a lot of traffic but also somehow has a small town feel in the middle of Northern Virginia.

I live in Vienna and I agree with this.

+1. I especially encourage you to get involved somewhere. I find the people pretty nice, actually, but they definitely bond and build communities and it's harder to break in over time. There are quite a few locally owned businesses that seem to have been around for awhile so people know the owners in the community. Baseball is a big thing. Soccer is pretty big too. I like that it's safe and my kids can ride to the town center and meet friends.

+100
Community is really Vienna's thing. I have lived in many areas and have never anywhere else had the full feel of a community so readily as I have in Vienna.
It is definitely a let-your-kids-ride-their-bike anywhere type of place.

It’s not that affluent and it definitely isn’t close-in to DC. But if you don’t mind congestion, commuter hell, and a ton of families with very narrow interests, it’s probably better than living in Herndon or Ashburn.

you gotta live there to understand.

As a Vienna resident, I am surprised by the put downs. Everyone we know in Vienna is a highly educated professional with solid UMC or UC backgrounds. There are plenty of new McMansions and plenty of porches and jaguars driving around, along with Subarus and volvos. In my neighborhood I see kids who go to TJ, Holton and Green Hedges school along with the local public. Our neighbors are well traveled and cultured and down to earth, considering.

Do not get the hate.

How far do you have to drive to see a play, concert, or a foreign or art house film? Now ask the same question of someone who lives in Bethesda, NW DC, or Silver Spring and you’ll see PP’s point about narrow interests, lack of culture, etc.

vienna resident, love it. all this vienna hate is unjustified.

If you're trying to avoid snobbery, I'd find out where PP lives and avoid that location...

HAHA yea.

Vienna has money but people are not snobby like mclean and bethesda. I swear the vast majority of people live there because of the title and nothing more. people have money in vienna and live there because of all the shops, activities and neighbors.

Yeah, the fact that Bethesda and McLean have nicer houses and better schools (both public and private) and are closer to DC has nothing to do with it.

Vienna does have more fast food joints if that’s important to you.

https://www.census.gov/quickfacts/fact/table/viennatownvirginia/PST045221

Median HHI in Vienna is $168k while HHI in Bethesda is $172k. It is really absurd to claim Vienna is significantly less wealthy than Bethesda.

Quoting HHI stats has nothing to with whether the schools or houses are nicer. Chevy Chase has much nicer houses than Great Falls but the HHI in Chevy Chase might be less because the houses are on smaller lots. Vienna doesn’t have neighborhoods even close to as nice as Battery Park in Bethesda or a public school as well regarded as Whitman. Let’s not even get into comparing private school options. You don’t want to compete with Sidwell Friends, Holton Arms…
