Did anyone see that child ask M. Obama about immigration?

If you know they are illegal immigrants why haven't they been reported? I, among many, many others, am damn sick and tired of my tax dollars going to support illegal immigrants. I believe that children born in the US should NOT be given automatic citizenship. There is a movement to repeal this law and I sincerely hope that it is retroactive.

I was educated at a private boarding school and classes were small and we had almost individual attention from teachers. Today's public schools are overcrowded and teachers are overworked, overwhelmed, and grossly underpaid. The public education system in this country is appalling and some high school graduates are functionally illiterate. If ONLY children of American citizens and legal immigrants were eligible to attend public schools, I wonder if many of these problems wouldn't cease.

Every single illegal immigrant came here voluntarily knowing they were breaking US law and they know the consequences.
Of course this child was coached. Immigration should act and deport her illegal parent or parents immediately.

Not going to happen, Mr. McCarthy.

Put aside all the other factors, most of us would be hypocrites as that is how our ancestors became citizens (by virtue of birth). We are the trickle down of that . . . how far back would you go? To the Mayflower?

And retroactive? How far back do you plan to go? My great-grandparents didn’t become citizens until after they were here for 10 years (off the boat from Germany), and well after they had my grandparents. So I guess the next four generations, from my 90 yo grandfather to my 4 yo daughter, are all illegal. Munich, here we come! Hope we get there in time for Oktoberfest!

It’s good to see boarding school taught you logical thinking – your parents really got their money’s worth. You may have attended a private boarding school, but you certainly were not educated there.

OP here.
A few questions for everyone:
About the illegal immigrants who some feel so sorry for who never commit crimes and just work hard. Are they going to keep working hard when they become citizens, or get on the dole?
Do we enjoy this phenomenon of their desperation making for exploitable workers?
Who cares if they pay taxes? Lots of people pay taxes, like foreign corporations in the US,...so what? If they didn't, they would be breaking more laws.
Does it occur to anyone that when "they" are in charge , they will find some way to make it so they can draw on Soc Sec when they turn 65, even if they were illegal when they contributed? How about that drain?
How about the millions of LEGAL applications to emigrate to the US? Are we sending a message that says just butt in line?
BTW, when is the end? I don't know how many millions pf people in the world want to come here, but do we say yes to all of them?
Last, I for one am very nervous about this entitled group that is bullying its way around this country. Demanding this and that while blatantly defying the law. Think about what you're getting. On Ellis Island there were rules, and people followed them, many were sent back. I suspect that the mafioso ways of some of these countries may be coming to America, no respect for the law.

You would have said that to an 8-year-old child? Wonderful response. You're a piece of work.

I think we can all agree that someone who could make such a remark is a sociopathic cretin. That and a terrible politician.

I don't know why you're saying that. I'm sorry if your 2nd grader can't talk about political issues that are a reality in his world.
Mine can. He knows what's our situation here and we often say "if one day I meet Obama on the street I'm so gonna ask him about the terms in my work permit!" and our 2nd grader knows exactly what we're talking about.

Years ago when the wildlife protection act was being renewed, Congress used dd's elementary school class for the photo op. She was going to ask why DC didn't have Senators. That's my girl! But the kids were never allowed to speak.

She wears a big heavy coat so no one will see, and she comes here for 2-3 weeks to have her baby. She has done this twice w/ both of her kids.

You know, if I were in her situation I would do the same thing. I understand this from an individual perspective regardless of whether this is good for the country overall.

Paycheck withholding collects much of the federal tax from illegal workers, just as it does for legal workers.

The impact on Social Security is significant, though, because most of that money is never claimed by the people who pay it but instead helps cover retirement checks to legal workers

Yep, we should thank those folks for helping to fund our retirements!

As a baby boomer, here's the "drain" I am worrying about -- my generation! When my huge generation retires, we will drain Social Security. The immigrants who come here are quite young which keeps our age distribution much broader than countries like Japan which have lots of old people and not so many young people. I agree that immigration has to be reformed so there are not so many people coming here illegally -- but their contribution to social security is good for our country and the influx of young people can have good effects for us -- as long as the young people are successfully integrated into our society -- through education for example. Kicking young people out, refusing to educate them, or provide them healthcare and so forth is not in the best interest of our country -- and, selfishly, of my generation.

If that's your worry , support more LEGAL immigration- not lawlessness and chaos.

The point is your grandparents became legal. Many illegals that are currently in the country have no intention of ever becoming legal citizens because they are too afraid of deportation by even initiating the proper paperwork. So, YES, there is a difference between illegal immigrants 90 years ago and illegal immigrants today.

Being here illegally is CRIMINAL.

You sound so ignorant. Most people who are here legally actually have a tax payer ID number and do pay taxes. Just because you didn't get here legally or just because you got to an illegal status (expired visa or greencard, for example), it doesn't mean you are just sucking the rest of the country dry.

Bull! I work with pregnant Anerican citizens who are not eligible for proper pre- and post-natal care because they aren't on welfare and "make too much money" to qualify for food stamps, housing, and other social services. It burns me up when I see illegals have their children here and they receive the care and services citizens of this country are denied. Most of you don't even know what the hell you are talking about. American citizens go to bed hungry--the elderly, children, but you think it is all right to take care of illegals? I bet we'd hear you screaming if you were denied social services you or your children need.

Until you have actual knowledge of how much illegal immigrants cost US taxpayers and see American women and children do without then shut up, or, better still, put your money where your mouth is and contribute 25% of your annual income to take care of the illegal immigrants you think do no harm or cause no inconvenience.
