Are you for real or just a mean person? ... they are "terrible people" ? Isn't that the American dream.... to better our and our children's lives? And anyway, she is a CHILD and was probably born here, so that makes her an American. I don't care where the term "WOP" came from. I just know I would never use it. Signed, Granddaughter of an immigrant. |
Granddaughter, I think you are completely off base and you should work on your reading comprehension. The poster you are quoting was being sarcastic and he/she does NOT think hey are terrible people. Don't snap so quickly. |
Yup, Granddaughter, PP was on your side. |
Then what's with the "don't even go there... BS" remark? That didn't strike me as sarcastic. |
Think she meant that they can't say their ancestors came here legally to argue that the current illegal immigrants should have come into the country legally too. |
Granddaughter here. Sorry PP, everyone's right. Read it wrong... am tired and this topic makes me feel teary-eyed. I know several children whose welfare is at stake regarding this issue. Need to go to bed. Buena Noche, todo mundo! Or in my grandmother's language, Gute nacht... schlaf ruh. |
That's what many people say when attacking illegal immigrants. They claim because their ancestors found a way to get here legally, the illegal immigrants have no excuse. That poster was simply stating that most of those immigrants came here before immigration laws or really came illegally. By the way, I'm an immigrant who doesn't have English as her first language and have been here for only 4 years. You guys should really read a little more and work on your reading comprehension. |
Yes, many of our ancestors were immigrants; however, now these illegal immigrants are not paying taxes (living here tax free), but sending their children to our schools. Our economy is in a major deficit as it is, let alone supporting these tax free illegals. This is not fair to us tax payers. And to the point of treating them like criminals - they are breaking the law by being here illegally, thus that does make them criminals. |
If she is an American and her parents are illegal, she can't live here until she turns 18.
Anyway, the question was rude, like some kind of entitlement. "Why would you want to respect the law and punish us when we break it?" |
Again, being an illegal immigrant does NOT equal not being a tax payer. Many illegal immigrants pay taxes with a tax payer ID. And many US citizens don't pay their taxes. I have a friend whose green card expired and she couldn't afford to have it renewed because she was about to have a baby and had no money to do it. She was here illegally for a year, but before that she spent 15 years working and paying taxes. People who are here as immigrants are often the most hard working people here and they would pay any kind of taxes on top of taxes already paid if it meant changing their status to legal immigrants. |
That's the thing though. A lot of people feel coming to the US and becoming an American is a type of entitlement, almost like a fundamental right. |
Yes, that's how we've framed this country's ideology for almost 300 years... as a BETTER place to live, work, and raise children... we keep saying we're the "greatest country on earth." Should we expect people from other countries to doubt this? |
22:16 here: this may be off topic, but my SIL's sister, who lives in Peru and is a Peruvian citizen, purposely comes up here to visit every time she is about to deliver a baby - just to deliver her baby here in the US so the baby will be dual citizen. She wears a big heavy coat so no one will see, and she comes here for 2-3 weeks to have her baby. She has done this twice w/ both of her kids. |
America is far from greatest. I'm here because of work and my kids are going to another country to attend better schools.
If the child is American she has no right to go to school for free? Just in case her parents are deceased or non-tax payers? |
http://www.usatoday.com/money/perfi/taxes/2008-04-10-immigrantstaxes_N.htm Many illegal immigrants pay up at tax time The tax system collects its due, even from a class of workers with little likelihood of claiming a refund and no hope of drawing a Social Security check. Illegal immigrants are paying taxes to Uncle Sam, experts agree. Just how much they pay is hard to determine because the federal government doesn't fully tally it. But the latest figures available indicate it will amount to billions of dollars in federal income, Social Security and Medicare taxes this year. One rough estimate puts the amount of Social Security taxes alone at around $9 billion per year. Paycheck withholding collects much of the federal tax from illegal workers, just as it does for legal workers. (snip) The impact on Social Security is significant, though, because most of that money is never claimed by the people who pay it but instead helps cover retirement checks to legal workers |
