I love my family of origin (parents, brother) but their conservative views make it hard

But now things are feeling deeply personal given the overturn of Roe etc. And yes, I saw this coming, I haven't been burying my head in the sand, but wasn't quite prepared for how it would feel. It's also getting tough because I have two girls and they are getting old enough, especially my 14 year old, to become really frustrated with grandparent views.

It's already been strained, and now it feels even harder. Just want to commiserate if anyone else is going through this.

Yes,OP. I’ve been going through the same thing.

My parents have become more conservative during the pandemic and watch Fox News constantly.

My DH doesn’t even want to get together with them because they always bring up politics, making it extremely uncomfortable to be around them.

DH is very liberal, and I am as well.

I mean, I guess if you can accept racism, homophobia and shooting kids, you can tolerate anything.

Conservatives can’t tolerate brown people, lgbtq people, and non-Christian European foreigners, etc. They see it as a threat when other white people won’t tolerate their hateful, racist views. They seem to be deeply bothered in being rejected by what they consider should be their own side. It’s really gross and I have nothing but contempt and disgust these horrible people.

Until Trump it was social taboo to show your racism, misogyny, nationalism. Things like the KKK, Jim Crow laws, Nazis and anti-semitism, mass killing of kids, and harassing gay people were universally accepted as repugnant. Trump and Fox mainstreamed all this and now all the white people who felt this way are letting it out. It was probably always there but just hidden. It’s hard to realize that someone you are related to is such a rotten person.
