No need to track people from thread to thread.

I would leave if that happened.

Anonymity is that entire point, and it’s important within and across threads.

It’s only important within a threat if you are being a jerk.

Not necessarily. I have a high profile job. I wouldn't risk it somehow coming out that I am stating my opinion.

Are you guys aware that you don’t have to have your SSN as your profile name??

Sure; however, even if I make up a name, I would be worried that someone would somehow make the connection. As much as I love DCUM (and I have learned so much from it), the juice isn't worth the squeeze for me if someone read one of my posts, took it out of context and then "outed" me. I would completely stop coming to the site.

In my opinion, the complaints about "mean" and "nasty" posts for the current time period are very much overblown. Jeff does a great job moderating, is very responsive and keeps the site functioning well.

On Mumsnet you can "name change" if you don't want to be outed. Then you can change back to your regular name.

No way

No. I was on yuku boards years ago, in a fitness related board. I was fine with a “screen name”. But you could be as anonymous as you wanted to be. I left when people starting linking Facebook pages and such. I wanted ZERO overlap into “real life”.

No. I may as well be on Reddit.

Anonymous wrote:Has the nastiness on DCUM always been this bad or is there an increase? It's just awful. I understand things can get heated when talking about politics, for example, but even posts on mundane topics become a battlefield. Twice in recent weeks I posted completely innocuous comments in discussions and someone responded in such a sarcastic manner that I didn't go back. I've seen people who post a question about a health matter get ridiculed, and know not to open some threads because it is so toxic. I wonder how much of this is attributable to just a few people (there does seem to be some commonalities) but surely no one has that much time on their hands. I also wonder if they are like this in real life, which is kinda scary.

I've definitely seen commonalities across the relationship, jobs, and real estate (to a lesser extent) forums when it comes to meanness. It's the same people stirring the pot over and over; they don't change their writing style. The politics forum is a different beast; I fully believe professional trolls post BS there very frequently. No sane person thinks a number of things I've read on there.

No. I don't actually care about anonymity vs psuedonymity but I'm too lazy to log in/create an account.

I agree with you. I've gotten a lot of good advice on here, and people post about very sensitive topics here (hiring lawyers, being fired, in-law issues, etc). They get very blunt advice, can hide in the void, and probably don't want a paper trail.

Yep. This.

I was a member on a forum years ago that required log in. Legit fights broke out often and nastiness knew no bounds.

I've seen it in a school related Facebook group... so a local group with their REAL NAMES. Some people can't help themselves.

This is the only forum I've seen that does not require a person to create a screen name. The explicit forum on DCUM died after that requirement was put in place. I'd post just as much if I had to use a screen name (I have one) here. So what if people recognize me as the charming person I am.

No. People can be mean and make posts to stir the pot, but you can also get legitimate information about jobs, schools, medical practices, mental health services, etc. People might not be so forthcoming if they had to register a user name that could be tracked.
