Millennials living in Airbnb abroad for 3-6 months and they are calling themselves EXPATS?

(1) they are not expats. My sister-in-law and and my college roommate, both of whom have children and husbands and both of whom have been working in Europe for 30+ years while retaining their American citizenships and dealing with all the intricacies of that status are true expats. There is an extensive network of American expat families in Europe who help each other out in extraordinary ways. A remote worker in an AirBNB for 6 mos. has nowhere near the experience and expertise to earn the albeit informal and unofficial title of expat.
(2) Read "The Expats" by Chris Pavone. It's a fictional spy story but it conveys some of the complexities of a true expat life.

The young single here-for-a-season-while-it's-still-fun workers are trying to borrow some glamour and prestige by using that word. Ick.

AMEN!!!!!

No, if you live and work in another country, you are considered an expat. Though I am not sure if this is correct if you are working virtually for your company in the U.S.

I’m mean I feel this way about military kids that call themselves well traveled. Maybe so. But it was due to your parent/s job. But I don’t say that out loud either.

Let people enjoy themselves.

Many of those POSERS are not even working. Living in an Airbnb abroad for 3-6 months does not make you part of the expat community.

I was an expat for 12 years and did occasionally meet someone who was living in my current city for a few months, sometimes traveling or a temporary work gig for a project. We never considered them expats.

I agree generally but can think of exceptions, primarily people who will relocate temporarily while working for the same company, with every intention of returning to the US. If your company puts you in France for a year to deal with a specific thing, and then you return to the US as planned, I don't really consider you an expat even though you "lived and worked" in another country. Even had a work visa! Still not an expat in the way I think of it. I'm not upset about it, but that's not really what I'm talking about when I refer to an expat.

This. It's really common to meet people like this as an expat, because often they reach out to you through friends as a resource to them while they are temporarily living in your city. But I think of them differently than I think of an actual expat who has put down more permanent roots.

But today in 2022 many of those same people are now online telling everyone that they are expats for "likes" and "views"

THEY ARE POSERS.

Typical millennial behavior of wanting the title without having to put in the work to achieve the title

"Millennial"

Lol, I'm nearly 40 years old. And a millennial. This is behavior is not descriptive of my circle.

Oh no! Somebody call the authorities whose job it is to arrest people who call themselves things boomers don't like!

Who handles that again? The Department of Weights and Measures? NIST?

OK grandpa, I just got off the phone with them. They've got a crack team of commandoes on their way to Bali as we speak. The bad Millennials can't hurt you anymore, now open up for your oatmeal, here comes the airplane!

+1. Being an expat isn’t really something people strive to be called…

But today there are millennials posting videos of themselves online staying in Airbnb abroad for as little as 3 months and they are calling themselves expats.

They are not expats they are Americans on extended vacations abroad.

They are desperate to be cool and woke. Let them be. I'd rather they make fools of themselves than have to deal with their screeching and caterwauling here back in the states. Maybe they'll decide to stay wherever they are.

LOL, as if we needed any more evidence boomers have literally no idea what "woke" means.
