You're living in your DCUM bubble. Many expats aren't wealthy and don't have "careers" like that at all -- they're retirees who move abroad because the cost of living is lower. |
I don't consider foreign service officers who move abroad temporarily with every intention of returning to the USA at some point to be ex pats. |
They definitely become members of expat communities though, because they live places for semi-permanent periods of time, plus they generally have the language skills and local knowledge to be able to settle into that kind of community. That's really the difference. If you are just staying somewhere long enough to see the sites, maybe travel around that country or region, maybe "host" some friends and family passing through at your rental, you aren't really an expat, you're a tourist. This is not a criticism, just a statement of fact. I'm not sure why someone would want to refer to themselves as an expat in that situation, when they could just say "I spent 8 months in Germany" or whatever, which still sounds interesting and fun, without making it seem like you are trying to be something you are not. |
| Are they really Millennial? Youngest are around 26 this year. |
| What difference does it make? |
So I can go and rent an Airbnb in Canada for 2 days and call myself an expat? |
I agree 100%. Many of these expat wannabees are delusional. |
They play 5-10 songs in a row on their phones and then they think they are DJs.
|
Because then she won't be so special anymore like pp defending. All hilarious considering to the natives the only people who matter in the equation you're just as foreign as the person who stayed for 6 months. |
I feel like this thread is by the same person who thinks everyone is copying her😀 |
Amen. Huge difference. Being an expat has indeed become trendy. |
They are TRY HARDS. POSERS. FRAUDS. |
Wouldn’t be surprised if many are unintentionally violating their visitor visas by working remotely. |
Tom Brady is more of an expat than they will ever be. |
"Unintentionally" = knowing full well what they are doing but just kind of pretending they don't But carry on, I'm not even mad at it (kind of respect it) -- just think it's silly to think these folks don't know exactly what they are doing |
