+1. Being an expat isn’t really something people strive to be called…

Times have changed. It is very en vogue right now.

HEY EVERYBODY LOOK AT MY $300 A MONTH APARTMENT IN ASIA/LATIN AMERICA/AFRICA ETC...

But today there are millennials posting videos of themselves online staying in Airbnb abroad for as little as 3 months and they are calling themselves expats.

They are not expats they are Americans on extended vacations abroad.

The nerve of those people. The absolute nerve.

I thought somewhere in this thread people would criticize the use of the word expat instead of seasonal worker on a visa or immigrant. But I forgot the word immigrant is only applicable to certain groups of people.

Expats are wealthy economic migrants who plan to go back to their country of origin.

Agree. Expats aren't typically trying to culturally assimilate, and are not renouncing their US citizenship. They are living and working in another country for a period of time. Retirees are a bit of a different story, although many retirees end up returning to the US at a certain point.

Immigrants are typically trying to immigrate to the country of choice and become a citizen That's not an expat.

I lived overseas 3 times as a kid, for 2-5 years each time. My father was there to work for a specified period. We returned to the US for "home leave". We were not emigrating, we were expats.

They are desperate to be cool and woke. Let them be. I'd rather they make fools of themselves than have to deal with their screeching and caterwauling here back in the states. Maybe they'll decide to stay wherever they are.

LOL, as if we needed any more evidence boomers have literally no idea what "woke" means.

Not a Boomer (it's capitalized, dearie), either and here to say that the term is used correctly. DP.

But today in 2022 many of those same people are now online telling everyone that they are expats for "likes" and "views"

THEY ARE POSERS.

Right, we got it the fourth time. These people are really upsetting you, huh?

It's "woke" to visit a different country? Dang how provincial are you?
And No. The term isn't used correctly.

OP seems to be the one capitalizing POSERS etc. My dude you need to step back from social media. And like take an edible or something.
Also I prefer the spelling "poseurs"

I’m living abroad for 6 months and working here. I don’t consider myself an expat. I have friends here (have been coming here the last 25 years), my DS goes to school here, and I live like a local, but I know it’s temporary. Still, it doesn’t bother me what other people do.

You don’t know. You are not the boss of them!

I identify as an expat. I just happen to live in downtown DC. You can’t control me!!

Millennials and younger say tons of annoying things - I mean most of what they say is annoying! “Taking a vacay with my BAE!!!!!!” What’s even worse is when their 50-something moms start talking like them.

DP. It's like you're all in a race to the bottom in this thread. No, "dearie", boomer is not capitalized.

So Millennials ruined being an ex-pat? Let's add it to the list of this generation's utter destruction of our country.
