The vast majority of students and teachers at the school are vaccinated or have already had covid, so I don't think this is going to create much of a disruption, and even if it did I think it is worth it to give the children the option of doing normal social things. It's very easy to point to one event and say that we shouldn't have taken the risk, but the risks exist for every gathering and we can't keep restricting children (especially when adults feel free to attend parties and gather in restaurants and go to a million other social events that could expose them to covid). Should we really be saying no dances, no assemblies, no big birthday parties, no going to the movies, etc. etc.? For how long?

I am Catholic and know many conservative Catholics who refused to be vaxxed because of a stem cell story constantly played on Fox News. So, do not assume HTS folks have been vaxxed. Kids will survive w/o some dumb father-daughter dance. They may not survive their conservative parents' views.

Well that's just silly. The pope said Catholics have a moral obligation to get vaccinated, and last time I checked he outranks Fox News in the Catholic hierarchy.

Are you Catholic? A lot of Catholics don’t like the current Pope because of some of his more liberal views…

I didn't think following the Pope's guidance was optional and/or dependent on whether you agreed with him. That doesn't mean that people don't ignore him in practice, but at least in theory it isn't really a matter of liking/disliking or agreeing/disagreeing.

You must not be Catholic.

Most don't practice everything the Church teaches.

Because the assumption is that men, and particularly Catholic men, are, by default, sexual predators and have no business being in the company of girls, even if it's their daughter.

Nah, I am Catholic and went to Catholic Schools my whole life. The dances are a holdover from the 1950s- exclusionary and sexist. They certainly do not need to be held to flaunt Covid precautions.

That's not it at all. It's weird and cringey because it reeks of old fashioned views of fathers as guardians of their daughters' 'purity'.

I must be naive. Here I just thought it was a time for fathers and daughters to bond.

Its a small private catholic School-if they want the traditions that is their choice. You choice is to not attend the school. Or if you attend the school and don't like the tradition work with the school to change it or don't go. The school and its community must see a value to the dance that is why they hold the dance. Catholic school have other traditions like breakfast with Santa, Easter brunch breakfast and Halloween parties. Again this is their school and their traditions - don't like it do go to the school or if you go work to change the traditions.

What's wrong with a Father-Daughter dance? Our private all-girls school had one. It was open to girls in Pre-K up to 4th grade, and you could bring your father or any important male in your life. Most brought their fathers but I was a few with grandfathers or uncles. Everyone had a blast.

At this stage it doesn't matter if they have been vaxxed. I've been vaxxed and boosted, but I have no intention of getting the second booster. If I had not been vaxxed already, I probably would think twice about getting vaxxed with the current situation (most having natural immunity and the mildness of symptoms).

Adding to this that I am also Catholic and my daughter attends Catholic school. Most parents I know have been vaccinated and so have their kids, and some are still masking. There are a scant few outliers.

For those surprised at the animosity towards father-daughter dances, never forget that that the other side hates you.

I'm starting to see that, given they can't come up with any reason why it's cringy and ick.
