-1 to all these examples because it doesn't work if the parents are regular people, or minor celebrities at best. This only works if the parents were/are legitimately famous, and the kids are even more famous. Like if Cindy Crawford's daughter became a bigger model than she was (which isn't going to happen). No way is Dakota Johnson more famous than Melanie Griffith or Don Johnson were at the height of their fame - not to say it couldn't happen, but it definitely hasn't. |
You don't think so? She only reached nation wide stardom when 'Loving You' came out in 1974. She died in 1979. She only had two singles that made the charts, "Loving You" (reached #1) and the follow-up off the same album (her only album to reach gold), "Inside My Love" (reached #76). Minnie was fantastic, but I don't think many people had heard of her before her only hit song. I think Maya is much more of a household name than her mother ever had a chance to be, probably due to her untimely death. |
This is Maya Rudolph's mom, she was an R&B singer. |
| I just googled Elvis Costello. It doesen't seem like his father ever really reached fame level. |
She is not more famous than Don Johnson or Melanie Griffith. She is simply younger and thus it is her time. |
| Enrique Iglesias |
We are still singing Minnie Rippleton's music forty years later. Will the people40 years from now know Maya? |
| I don’t know about *more* famous, but Stella McCartney has a career that is totally her own thing. |

Nas. His father is a jazz artist; he sings and plays the guitar and cornet. He was very well regarded in the jazz community in the 70's. His first album charted on the Billboard jazz charts.
Nas is very well known outside of the hip-hop community and he reached mega-stardom within the hip-hop community. |
Maybe. I'd be curious to know how many people know the song but couldn't tell you who sang it. |
| Alan Alda. |
| The best answers so far are Gwyneth Paltrow and Jake and Maggie Gyllenhaal. |
I agree with this, but that's really saying something because Henry Fonda was hugely famous. But Jane has had both breadth and staying power. And a degree of infamy. |
Me! I know the song but had no idea who sang it. This was the first I heard of Minnie and that she is Maya Rudolph’s mom. |
You poor thing. |
