God Son’s Tuition

Exactly. And there is no way in hell I'd contribute to this, niece/nephew/godchild/ whatever. This is on the parents and student to figure out. It is a Life Lesson.

What is the most tax effective way for the parents or the son to receive this money? All recommendations and insights are welcome.

I am not sure what we will contribute. Likely somewhere between $1-2k per year as long as he stays in good academic standing.

I didn't know people set up Go Fund Me pages to pay for their kids college...

However, 1-2k would barely cover anything. Maybe just pay directly the school for boarding, books, meals, etc.

Schools will gladly take money you send to them. Just email the relevant department (student services, registrar, something like that) and ask.

Other way is to create a 529 for him. This way, the money you put in will grow tax-free until he wants to take it out (of course, that may be right away). 529s can be used fro education expenses only, though it's a fairly wide definition.

I am very generous with my time and donations to charity. However, this is for the family to figure out. Part time job for the kid, community college, and loans all come to mind. Parents could budget their discretionary spending, too.

By not giving them money, they'll figure it out. It's truly a Life Lesson. OP gave them advice and they've ignored it.

I would gift the money directly to the school

I kind of agree with the PP's, this is for them to figure out. Maybe it's cc then off to a different school, but relying on a last minute Go Fund Me to pay for something like college- that will not end well for those who donated and the people who collected. This has turned into a life lesson scenario.

Really folks! Is this where we are on society? Yikes!

Maybe if it cost $20-$70K a YEAR to get a higher education, people would not do this. You are outraged over the wrong thing.

Oh, well thank goodness they have you to teach them that. God, you're an insufferable twat.

Lol - are you British? I never hear Americans using 'twat' (I am British)

I feel like Go Fund me is more about getting money from lots of people you don't know or tangentially know. But a god parent? If you are sending them money as a graduation gift or a birthday gift or whatever- put a check in an envelope. No strings attached- use it for what you want/need. Right now that would be assumed to be college related. Give what you can and/or normally would have. If you are capable of doing more, great. But just give the god son the money.

This. So stupid to probably be going into debt in this economy for an OOS school if it's not an ivy.
