Wegmans

While there was lots of convenience foods, I was surprised that the actual grocery part seemed almost like a warehouse and very limited. But I was at the Tyson’s one and read that it’s grocery footprint was smaller than others.

I was trying to figure out if it was worth going again. I found the convenience foods pretty reasonably priced, but not that great tasting (not bad, just not worth going for alone). I loved their olives and bagels.

The Tysons one is super tiny and they limit what they carry. You need to hit one of the main locations. The Tysons one is for the lunch crowd primarily to go and pick up a salad.

OP here - I went to the Tyson's location so maybe that was part of it. Half the store seemed to be prepared foods (which looked tasty for a single person or couple grabbing dinner but didn't really work for family meals as much). If I go again I will look for their store brands for grocery items, produce, and cheese/deli/bakery/prepared foods maybe only a little bit since it's so pricey.

I usually go to Germantown but I’ve also stopped by the Alexandria store if I’m in the area. That store is great but super busy.

Anybody else noticing that they are starting to carry very few name brands of certain items, and instead are offering only their house brand (which I agree is excellent, but sometimes I prefer a name brand)? I see it happening now in the chips aisle. This is making me not shop there as often.

Their prepared foods are just ok for the price. I have had better luck with prepared stuff at Harris Tetter and Trader Joes. We like the bakery stuff at Wegmans.

We live in Arlington and I have only been to the Tysons Wegmans a couple of times but I found some of the products we normally buy at the grocery store in Arlington were way cheaper in Tysons. In some cases it was a $3 difference with Tysons being cheaper. I have to admit I was surprised.

Yes for me this has been true a while and why it will not be my only store.

Yes, they always do this. They carry name brands and then they disappear, replaced by the Wegman's brand. However, on the name brand stuff, their prices are 25-30% less than my local Giant and Safeway stores. It doesn't bother me that much.

Arlington/Alexandria HT prepared pizza is WAY better than Tysons HT.

I can get the majority of my shopping done at wegman's - speciality items, good produce and meats, and everyday grocery stuff. The bakery items are far better than HT or Giant.

I can't wait until the one near me in Reston opens.

Me, too! We’re halfway between the ones that are opening in Rockville and DC. Shop there often when at the beach in Jersey and it has always seemed more expensive to me. We’re about half and half Costco and Safeway right now. Also agree with the PP who thinks the prepared meals aren’t great for families. We have teenagers but they would be great for a couple.

They are very anti-union and their workers don’t get the pay, benefits and protections that the workers at Giant and Safeway get. I’ll pick up a couple things there occasionally but I’m not looking to make them my regular grocery store because of that.

I like Wegmans for seafood, rotisserie chicken (when they had them), milk and eggs (cheap) and gluten-free products. However, I can never seem to get everything I need when I shop there, and their prices are higher than Giant on many items.

Is the Rockville store even happening?

But, Tostitos, cookies, coffee, ice cream, canned soups, even hygiene and beauty supplies will be on par with cheaper grocery stores and even Aldi.
It is definitely cheaper than Giant and HT and Safeway. I buy their deli ham. It is delish and cheap, give it a go. Their turkey lunch meats are also great price. And the fact that they have just about everything?
I mean, keto bar? Check. All flavors of Lara bars? Check. Any kind of chips you like? Check. Their food bar is way too expensive, even more so now that they are not actually doing it. Or did they start offering it again?
Their pasta sauce? Cheap, their canned tomatoes? Cheap. But, fresh produce? Expensive except for some bags of potatoes.
Usually Wegman's berries are fresh and good, not like the other stores where you pay to throw produce in the trash as soon as you get home.

I shop for most of my fresh produce at Lidl and never have to throw anything away. If I need more "exotic" produce, then I shop at somewhere like Coco's.

The Wegmans store brands of marinara are better than Rao's esp the Grandma's Pomodoro. Or try Newman's Own Marinara. Neither have any added sugar.
