Wegmans

I'm confused at people saying Wegmans is cheaper than Giant because that is far from what I've heard.

For low-sugar options, Giant tries to provide affordable options with their in-house brand Taste of Inspirations. They are struggling with supply chain much like everyone on some items. Wegmans is more focused on cheese and prepared foods.

The thing about Wegmans is that you can buy Wegmans brand everything and it’s very good:
Cereal
Pasta sauce
Detergent
Crackers

Literally everything. You don’t have to buy name brand. The Wegmans brand is very good.

This happens to me whenever I just run in Giant/Harris Teeter for a few things. They are so expensive!
We shop at Wegmans, TJs, and Costco.

+1, their model is everyday low prices so you won't see a lot of weekly specials Ala Safeway etc. It's my primary grocery and I shop that way. I don't buy the prepared foods, I buy ingredients to cook my own meals. Yes, sometimes we buy a fancy cheese or dessert but most of the time is regular grocery items.

For me, Wegmans is less expensive than Giant/Safeway and far better produce quality than Giant. My pantry and fridge could be a Wegmans advertisement as I buy almost everything Wegmans brand.

+1
Their bakery bread is worth the trip alone. Wegmans has the most consistently good organic produce too.

Re savings, check the app for coupons.

They have the best produce outside of MOM’s and the farmers market.

Agree with most of what others have posted - the store brand is very good - pasta, pasta sauce, canned tomatoes, cereal, chips, you name it - it's as good as name brand.

I also agree that Safeway and Giant's prices are MUCH higher than Wegmans in my experience.

We don't really buy prepared food there and the more expensive things we will buy (cheeses, for example) are just expensive items anywhere. The selection cannot be beat. It's not comparable to Giant or Safeway.

Their bakery items are great but they are expensive.

The $5 fresh spinach pack is a better deal there than anywhere else, I think. The packs are super stuffed (more volume) and stay fresher longer. Bottled spring water, bulk sliced cheese, marinara sauce are also cheaper. Some staple produce like carrots, apples, and chicken thighs, along with frozen veggies are competitive. The Wegman's bottled tikka masala is amazing imo, and worth the slightly higher price.

I agree that many of the prepared foods are also good in terms of taste. In particular, sushi is much better than Safeway (at least at the Tyson's location). It's an actual decent grocery store sushi. (Fwiw, I have family in Japan, have lived there myself for a few years, and eaten plenty of good sushi to compare.)

Sparkling water
Coffee
Etc

Agree. Wegmans can be very good if you resist the amazing cheese, prepared foods, bakery 😀 but that’s pretty tough!

I went for the first time recently. I expected it to be more expensive than it was, since I always hear that it is so nice. While there was lots of convenience foods, I was surprised that the actual grocery part seemed almost like a warehouse and very limited. But I was at the Tyson’s one and read that it’s grocery footprint was smaller than others.

I was trying to figure out if it was worth going again. I found the convenience foods pretty reasonably priced, but not that great tasting (not bad, just not worth going for alone). I loved their olives and bagels.

Wegmans has the best fruit in this area. Rao’s spaghetti sauce is cheaper. Love the place and wish they had one in Arlington. Fairfax is my go to.

The Tysons one is super tiny and they limit what they carry. You need to hit one of the main locations. The Tysons one is for the lunch crowd primarily to go and pick up a salad.

Yeah I don’t get the hype. It’s as expensive as Whole Foods but the food is no better than giant (and the meat is worse) although they have more brands and more upscale brands. I guess you pay for all those fake windows and wide aisles. Oh and my kids like the train.
