Now that CDC is not recommending masks in schools, will private schools lift their mandates?

I have watched as an outsider, and I don't like this. This feels very political and not scientific. I predict that even with the CDC news there will still be resistance. My kids are older and can deal with the masks but for little kids, if I was a little kid parent, I would be upset. The foggy glasses, the anxiety. For every kid who says no problem, there are five who have trouble with the masks. Time to support kids.

Oh, FFS. Try raising some kids with resilience and not such delicate hothouse flowers.

Yes it is. Speak for yourself

Would someone who knows please clarify the DC situation- are private schools bound by the mayors order or not? At the start of the pandemic they were except from the social distance 6’ mandate. Still the case?

I don’t think we can all cater to your special needs whether it’s that you want to get into folks’ personal space, can’t wear a mask (hahaha) or are a trucker-fascist

You’ll do as told or change the school

You're correct. Starting Monday, we will reach out to the school(s) to start working with them to change to a mask optional policy. My question is if there needs to be a different approach for DC schools, who are still, in theory, under the DC Dept of Health mandate. VA and MD schools should be no problem to change at this point.

Hahaha. You *vastly* overestimate your own importance.

These are just innocent mothers starting the same thread with the same argument over and over again. Of course. Everyone telling them to be reasonable, have empathy and be patient, and not to fall prey to political agendas, is crazy, right? Wrong.

NP. Please not assume people that want to get rid of masks that aren’t scientifically proving to be needed are RWNJs. It’s thinking like that that will caring upon a red wave. Some of us Dems have logic and aren’t led by hysteria.

What does being a particular political party supporter have to do with it? Either which way you vote?

Because these are not real threads. They are either started by trolls or moms seduced by a political agenda. Why?

1. Private schools have been proactive. Mask mandates will be lifted. So why get your knickers tied up in a twist in several threads per week just before that happens. So you can say we won, prevailed. Nah, ya didn’t
2. You have no empathy. We wear masks for those too young to get vaccinated or those that are at risk. It’s part of being a community member. Inability to be a decent human strongly aligned with certain voting patterns. So, ya did
3. If you are a genuine dcum freaking out over this, maybe don’t drink or hate quite so much

hahahahahaha!!!!

You were the one saying we will take off masks when the powers tell you it is time. So it's time? Cause yesterday you were high and mighty lol...so love seeing you defeated.

No idea what school you go to, but ours will lift when normal people are ready.

Normal/average people can’t name 3 branches of government. Smart people can read data for themselves and make informed decisions. Smart people follow the science and the science says it’s time to give up the masks.

I don't want to get into the debate about whether a HS student should wear a mask.
As a parent who has a DC in PK4 -- what is frustrating is that the CDC is issuing this change without providing the access to vaccine for little kids. I get it, some will say the risk of death is small for kids. But hey 1000+ kids died and I watched my neighbor's otherwise healthy 3-yr old sent to hospital by ambulance on Christmas.

Under 5 COVID deaths are not too dissimilar from Flu deaths for same age range and that’s not accounting for under 5 has access to a flu shot. I have an under 5 year old. We have to get to the point where we accept that this is another scary thing in the world (car accidents, drowning, drive by shootings) and pray that our children are spared. We can’t ask the entire country to mask just like we can’t ask an entire country to close all pools to prevent child drownings. Also, your under 5 year old can wear a KN95 mask.

That first sentence is literally wrong. Now depending on how you drive or play with guns, you can still choose to move on, if your school told you so.

While children are overall at a lower risk of Covid, very young kids, especially those with preexisting health conditions, are still not in the clear, Gottlieb said. About 1,100 pediatric deaths have occurred from Covid since the beginning of the pandemic, with about 400 in kids under 5, the former FDA chief pointed out. By comparison, Gottlieb said, only five children have died from the flu in the last two years.

Enough said. On where this is coming from, please do start calling the school on Monday do we have your names confirmed.

OP not captive to a political agenda? Need proof of crazy, fascistoid tendencies? Look no further than the inspiration:

Assume private schools will go with whatever the majority of parents paying for the education want them to do.
Anonymous
Nope. They’ll go with the metrics and decision tree they set up, which you’ve been very well informed on by your school. So give it up, or please call the school under your real name.
Either way? Made my day.

Not really. The *vast* majority of kids/ parents at our DC school are ready to dump the masks. Yes, I know this for a fact as we've already started organizing on the topic.

And those reaching out to schools can now request dropping mask mandates as recommended by CDC guidelines. That is why our school said it would do - follow CDC guidelines.

2021 COVID death rates:
58 for kids 1-4
147 for kids under 1
206 total
*keep in mind these are babies that died (bless all of them) with COVID, not necessarily because of COVID

2019-2020 flu season (kids have access to vaccine)
Under 5 - 87 deaths

So no, not exact numbers but pretty darn close especially once you consider that many of the 206 had other contributing factors.

Not to mention that Omicron is less lethal than previous strains.

https://www.khou.com/article/news/health/coronavirus/verify-covid-19-more-pediatric-deaths-than-flu-last-18-months/285-2b3fef00-454b-4b43-a873-573ff6afffe7

"A lot of people compare COVID-19 to the seasonal flu. Some even say they think the flu poses a much bigger risk to children than COVID.

Is that true?

To answer the question, KHOU 11 pulled data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and spoke to Dr. Michael Chang, an assistant professor of pediatrics at UTHealth Houston.

According to the CDC, one child under 18 years old died from the flu in the whole country during the 2020-2021 flu season.

“That’s when we were masking, physically distanced, and a lot of kids were doing virtual learning. We had a lot of mitigations in place. One death due to the flu, but we continued to have COVID deaths,” Chang said.

Three years’ worth of data proves the same point. The CDC reported that there have been a total of 325 deaths in children under 18 related to the flu since the 2018-2019 season.

There were 136 pediatric flu deaths reported during the 2018-2019 season, 188 pediatric deaths reported in the 2019-2020 season and one death during the 2020-2021 season.

For COVID-19, 349 kids have died in the last 18 months, which is when the pandemic began.

Chang said that suggests COVID-19 is more transmissible than the flu, and likely more dangerous for children.

Claims that the flu is more dangerous to children than COVID-19 are false."

That first sentence is literally wrong. Now depending on how you drive or play with guns, you can still choose to move on, if your school told you so.
