It's actually awesome. F those kids. If they keep ruining a priviledge - take it away.

Bathrooms aren’t a privilege. They are a right. Do you have to walk for 10 minutes at work to find somewhere to pee that might not have toilet paper or soap when you get there?

I also dont f-up bathrooms at work and expect to be rewarded for it by my mommy

Where have we gotten the idea that it is OP's child that is the cause of the closures? Her child isn't causing trouble and therefore not being pampered for causing problems.

The lack of empathy for something that clearly makes learning even more challenging is disheartening. Do you get 5 minutes between work meetings to make your way to another class AND try to go to the bathroom?

Yes. I’m a middle school teacher. And it sucks

This is an old school tactic! My principal did this at my high school. We had one bathroom, on the other side of campus (this was out West where we had multiple 2 story buildings with classrooms), for 1800 students. I learned to hold it for the entire school day.

Um, there aren’t laws against what the principal at Deal is doing? Child abuse anyone?

My DCPS has been able to place a security guard in the hallway near the trouble-causing bathroom. They keep an eye on students in the hall and the bathroom.

Reread - no one said it was the OPs kid messing up the bathroom. Read again.

I think its absolutely hilarious that the parents on this site complain all the time about how nobody ever uses discipline or consequences anymore (there was like a 30 page thread specifically related to Deal this fall), and then, when Deal implements a consequence, the parents can't believe that their child would ever be inconvenienced. God bless Ms. Neal and please let me know if you ever need me to send you a bottle of wine for dealing with these nuts.

I completely agree. Not one other poster mentioned ideas on how to prevent the kids from ruining infrastructure but suddenly the hoodlums are all snowflakes with triggering bladder issues? Teach your kid to not destroy property.

Agree. Child abuse It’s actually offensive to suggest child abuse. On behave of abused children in America, I think Karen PP should STFU.

Really? It doesn’t seem abusive to control someone’s access to a bathroom? I would argue it is. If children have to choose between holding it in all day or attending their classes on time, that’s a hard spot to be in. Aren’t there building regulations regarding how many bathrooms are required per the size of the student body? Sounds illegal and abusive.

Holding it in can cause medical issues as can not drinking so as to avoid the need to use the bathroom. As a parent I’d be pissed. Never liked her. Never will

You should probably speak to a manager, and fast

Wouldn’t it be more unsafe and abusive if the school didn’t have enough support to safely manage bathroom behaviors and allowed this to continue. You have heard that schools are short staffed, right? I just have no clue what you want schools to do in a situation like that

I’m a Deal teacher who wants them open because I can’t be late to class. This means I can’t use the restroom for hours at a time. The kids messing them up aren’t the ones in that wing. It’s punishing the wrong kids.

LITERALLY NO ONE IS SAYING THIS

People are saying that closing the bathrooms have an impact on children (and adults) throughout the school, particularly affecting those with health conditions that make easy access to a bathroom important.

No one is defending the kids who are defacing the bathrooms, and most of us are acknowledging that there are no easy solutions to this problem.

Why aren't you using the adult bathrooms? In our elementary school we are prohibited from using student bathrooms. The last place I would want to be in a middle school is a student bathroom.
