Deal bathrooms

You don't take away bathroom privileges. I am escalating this. I am so over Deal.

Is your child unable to go to the other bathroom or is he triggered by using a different bathroom?

It's actually awesome. F those kids. If they keep ruining a priviledge - take it away.

Bathrooms aren’t a privilege. They are a right. Do you have to walk for 10 minutes at work to find somewhere to pee that might not have toilet paper or soap when you get there?

I also dont f-up bathrooms at work and expect to be rewarded for it by my mommy

WTF is wrong with you? Maybe the kid needs to be close to the bathroom because of their condition. Maybe walking to the other side of the building multiple times a day means they miss a lot of class. I like Ms. Neal and defend her on here regularly, but closing bathrooms is a terrible solution (even as I recognize that with staff shortages and other challenges there is no good solution).

Have some empathy.

Do you know how much time kids have that deal between classes to use the bathroom? Would you rather have them lose instructional time because they need to use the bathroom during class? Do they have to choose between using the bathroom because they have to use the bathroom and being late to class and getting in trouble for that?

You are literally making up scenarios. Adults in any school are aware if students have a medical condition and wouldn't deprive a student.

I think its absolutely hilarious that the parents on this site complain all the time about how nobody ever uses discipline or consequences anymore (there was like a 30 page thread specifically related to Deal this fall), and then, when Deal implements a consequence, the parents can't believe that their child would ever be inconvenienced. God bless Ms. Neal and please let me know if you ever need me to send you a bottle of wine for dealing with these nuts.

Where have we gotten the idea that it is OP's child that is the cause of the closures? Her child isn't causing trouble and therefore not being pampered for causing problems.

The lack of empathy for something that clearly makes learning even more challenging is disheartening. Do you get 5 minutes between work meetings to make your way to another class AND try to go to the bathroom?

Good grief.

I have a quiet girl who has never caused a trouble. She has a congenital issue and gets frequent UTIs. She needs to use the bathroom. She has told me that she can't find an open one during the short breaks she has. Several times she has given up.
I'm contacting the school. I'll get a letter from her urologist and from an attorney if needed. She underwent multiple surgeries as a child and has kidney scarring from the UTIs. I'm not letting this insane policy further damage her kidneys. Maybe Deal should think about this before they implement such an insane policy.

And no, she's not "triggered" by using a different bathroom. She just needs A bathroom, ANY bathroom but on several occasions has not been able to find an open one.

You're mad because the school, which doesn't know about your daughter's accommodation, isn't making efforts to implement that accommodation. Just tell them, no need to get big mad

This is an example for why Deal is just too big. The administration can't manage the behavior of 1500 students under one roof.

Bathrooms have always been an issue there. Lots of terrible conduct. My two former Deal students always would rush home and straight into the home bathroom because they hated using the bathrooms at Deal - they never had soap, often were broken and inevitably there was always some kid causing trouble there. Many students just didn't feel safe using those bathrooms. So sad that it has come to the school actually closing the bathroom though - I assume that is the solution the school landed on because they tried everything else. But really, that is the sign of a facility that should be shut down for code violations.

Exactly this. They have no power to discipline the kids who misbehave and the kids know it.

They cannot even provide safe bathrooms? It’s ridiculous.

Are the kids responsible being held to account? Are they being disciplined for their behavior? Where do you see appropriate consequences that would change the behavior?

I went to a similar school where they locked everything and took most privileges away. I remember in high school I felt so sick. The teacher wouldn't let me leave so I vomited everywhere (not on purpose! I couldn't control it any longer)

Problem is that teachers are not in the bathroom (for good reason) and don't see the conduct. Really, middle schools need single person restroom facilities. Of course, Deal would need like 50 of them to accommodate a population of 1600 students and teachers. Again, the facility is just tooo big. it's gone way past the size that benefits from economies of scale and now is far into the territory of problems amplified due to the larger than usual population.

I felt unsafe in our bathrooms too when I was in high school. I wish they were just locked stalls with sinks outside (ie no bathroom with a door)
