Why is UVA so expensive?!

now you need housing and 1000 for books

No, that’s inclusive of everything

I was pretty shocked that in state costs at W&M were $42K. DC was in the business school — extra $5K I think.

Georgia Tech is $50,610 OOS. UVA is $35,430. So GT is $15 Mk more

Engineering and applied sciences is 45k instate

It is? Global rankings:

ARWU 151-200
QS 217
THE 117

Wrong. UVA is 4th in the nation of all public universities and top 25 per USNWR

For anyone that is a VA resident and 90% or higher disabled veteran, Virginia has a little known and not highly advertised program called the Virginia Military Survivors and Dependents Education Program (VMSDEP), it is not the GI Bill. It is multi-tiered and gives free tuition and fees to any Virginia Public for up to 8 semesters, housing costs and books are not covered for T2 but are for T1.

“We offer a world class education…”

The world is a lot bigger than the US.

Exactly. UVA’s website says $45,636.

Hard to believe it only costs 5K more a year to attend GT. For the difference in quality, UVA is way overpriced.

COST of attendance at Emory is $71,700 not including airfare. UVA in state is $35,500. So you received a lot of financial aid? Or merit?

UVA isn’t terribly expensive. Emory would be more than twice UVA’s cost without financial aid. Apparently, you are relatively poor, otherwise you wouldn’t be getting need-based aid from Emory. If that’s true, it’s ironic that you’re now acting like Emory’s $75k all-in cost is cheap. You’re warped, OP, but glad things worked out for your kid.

Yeah, just make sure that you get that same $ amount annually or things get difficult.

Because enough parents are stupid enough to pay it. Or kid will be in debt forever. Good luck with that, baby.

congrats!

Both schools have endowments in the billions, so there is FA to give.

At Emory and privates in general, there are many "over-payers" so that students like yours can be subsidized/ tution-discounted by the full pay gang.

It doesn’t work that way.

Actually, it does.
"Full pay" might equate to 115% of the cost.

Some the "full pay" revenue can then be reallocated to provide institutional aid to others either in the form of need-based grants of financial aid or merit scholarships.

I am going to post this again because it was lost in all the bickering. I know there are a lot of active and retired military that look at this site that may fit this bill. It's not advertised very well, I know someone at work that was full pay until I told them about it, I learned of it word of mouth. It is a great program.

Looking at tuition alone, UVA is clearly higher than similarly ranked publics for IS.

Berkeley - 14k
UCLA - 13k
U Mich. - 16k
UNC - 9k
Georgia Tech - 13k

UVA - 19k

Looking at undergraduate enrollment:

Berkeley - 31k
UCLA - 31k
Michigan - 31k
UNC - 19k
Georgia Tech - 15k

UVA - 17k

UVA is clearly overpriced compared to UNC and Georgia Tech, and it does not provide a better education in the natural sciences compared to UNC or engineering compared to Georgia Tech. Humanities and business is probably stronger at UVA.

Compared to Berkeley, UCLA, and Michigan, UVA is not stronger in any field and is clearly outclassed in natural sciences and engineering. The value for UVA costing 3k-6k more per year is based on the undergraduate student population.
