Why is UVA so expensive?!

“I don’t think anyone in this room needs to be convinced of the value proposition of an education at the University of Virginia,” said UVa Provost Liz Magill. “We attract incredibly talented students, staff and faculty and we offer a world-class education that’s recognized globally for its strength and its breadth.”

She’s leaving to be Penn’s President. I know her personally (although it’s been years) and she is an extremely smart, impressive, and decent person. She’d no doubt run circles around you.

Good for her! Doesn’t change the facts, but I’m sure she’s a nice person.

+1

Expect more of this with the new governor.

congrats!

Both schools have endowments in the billions, so there is FA to give.

At Emory and privates in general, there are many "over-payers" so that students like yours can be subsidized/ tution-discounted by the full pay gang.

It doesn’t work that way.

This. VA wants the universities to be self supporting, much like private universities. No motivation to fix it as long as students are pouring in.

Students “are pouring” in because their are so few spaces for them. The state flagship of Virginia has fewer undergraduates than the University of Delaware!

Fixed below

“I don’t think anyone in this room needs to be convinced of the value proposition of an education at the University of Virginia,” said UVa Provost Liz Magill. “We attract incredibly “white” students, staff and faculty and we offer a “provincial” education that’s recognized “locally” for its strength and its breadth.”

Just please let them focus on scewing up the prestigious ones - W&M, UVA, VA Tech, URich, JMU and leave the more obscure ones like GMU alone. I got 4 years to convince my kid we won't ever stop by and visit if she goes to GMU even if it's 30 mins away.

Your turn.

Our child was just accepted by UVA and GA Tech for CS. We didn’t receive any aid from either one. Total OOS price at GT is only $5k higher than the IS price at UVA, we were quite surprised.

It should be. That’s one of the few programs where UVA is rated in the top ten. That is, the English department.

Georgia Tech is $50,610 OOS. UVA is $35,430. So GT is $15 Mk more
