Come back in a few weeks, OP.

I don't think people realize how high cases still are. We're still on par with the surge from last winter.

Except we’re all vaccinated, it’s a milder virus, and we have access to high quality masks. It’s not the same and it’s time end the mandate.

Deaths just went up in VA. But I'm sure those were "milder" deaths.

Deaths went up in VA due to the high number of unvaccinated people in the southern areas of the state. The vast, vast majority of deaths could have been prevented by people getting vaccinated. Plain and simple. This is not a masking issue. Yes, yes, I know that people in southern VA are not masking as well. But studies have shown that most of the masks that people are wearing (non-N95-type masks) do not work well against the virus. The key is vaccination.

It is time to let vaccinated students/staff opt out of masks.

Remember that pro-Trump doctor who also believes in demons?

It’s both vaccines and masks that should be current strategy at keeping Covid at bay.

Went on vacation over the holidays to SW VA with in-laws who live in Southern states. My family masked when out shopping. Theirs did not, as it seems to be a “cultural” thing. We didn’t get Covid. Both other families did, but were lucky not to get seriously ill thanks to vaccines (however, one BIL was very, very sick and missed weeks of work, and all kids had to miss more than 10 days of school while mine missed none). My kids and I wear KN95 masks that are readily available on Amazon. You non-mask zealots are just stubborn douche canoes.

My student-children are complaining. Not openly because they are polite, although I think one DC shared the opinion on the school "news." They mask and will continue to mask as long as it's required because we follow the rules, but they hate the masks and can't wait to be done with them.

Get your kid vaccinated or TTS.

Being vaccinated didn't prevent the recent surge.

Being vaccinated means you don’t miss school for an exposure, dummy.

My vaxed and boosted DC has been identified as a close contact 3 times, has not gotten sick, and has not missed school. One close contact was a child DC is in several classes and with and sits next to in all of those classes. We are convinced that the vaccination and boosting are the reason DC didn't get sick, not masks.

So this seems to prove the point that we should not have a mask mandate. You were protected by your KN95 masks despite all the unmasked people and their Covid germs making your "stubborn douche canoes" in-laws very sick. Why would this not be the same in our schools? The majority of people in this area would probably choose to mask and be protected. And other people (who perhaps believe that the downsides to their kids wearing masks outweigh the benefits) could opt out.

Wearing masks didn't prevent the recent surge.

Our community as a whole wasn't masking. Many are just living their lives like it's 2019. Cases surged. And some businesses closed as a result.

But our schools were masking and unlike so many other areas of the country, masks kept schools open here during the surge. Don't you want that?

✅ Yes the community as a whole was masking.

✅ Kids were out of school for the first two weeks of January so for the poster who notes there were more kids out for covid good news! they didn’t get exposed at schools

✅ It was widely acknowledged by professionals that despite masking and high vaccine rate, spread still occurred.

✅ The fear in Arlington is real. That fear is constantly pushed by parents to their children in subtle and not so subtle ways. There are always claims that they don’t discuss these things with their kids but kids overhear their rants, vents, and discussions. Kids know that they are wearing masks to prevent something scary - covid - from happening. And I think we have to stop pretending that this fear and anxiety subtle under current doesn’t effect kids.

✅ In an non judgemental way ask your kids if they know why they are wearing masks, when they think they might not have to wear a mask, what it means if they don’t have to wear a mask anymore, does the idea of not wearing a mask make them nervous, if wearing a mask helps protect them from something scary, what happens when someone gets covid. If you really listen you will probably be surprised at the answers you get from young kids.

It’s “affect” when used as a verb. And also, yeah, living through a Pandemic kind of sucks and is scary. I get it, you want it to be over, but pretending that is is won’t make it so. Battle fatigue is a b****.

This is what has basically changed my mind in the masking issue. The rate of masking in Arlington is super high like almost 100% and still the spread happened.
All of the spread seemed to be driven by unmasked holiday activities. There was no spike with school reopening, probably because of masks.

The spread happened on sports teams where kids were not masked. Lots of students caught Covid while watching said games because they’re masks were pulled down. Others socialized or ate indoors without masks. Spread did not happen in classrooms where kids and teachers were masked.

It has nothing to do with masks in schools. Kids were going to indoor playdates and birthday parties unmasked. When one person in the house get it, so did fifty to 80% of the household. I’m not aware of any spread actually in schools.

Most of us who are currently pro-mask aren't pro-mask forever. Right now rates are as high as they were last year, no I don't want kids unmasked in schools. Come talk to me in the spring when rates are low again, classroom windows can be opened, and community spread is low.

As a PP said, if your child is unmasked and tests positive, mine now has to SQ according to current APS rules. I don't want mine missing ten days of school because you don't want to inconvenience your child with a mask. Get to lower spread rates, implement test to stay and then we'll be in a position to move to voluntary masking.
