Merit scholarship for few freshman students at UMD.

It's the highest level merit scholarship at UMCP.

It was an Hispanic kid who sued.

In response, I would say that URM status can definitely be a consideration for B/K, but having attended the BK luncheon for Finalisst just 3 years ago, the overwhelming majority of invited attendees were White or Asian. I also know many URM's in the Honors College, even those with high stats, who didn't get B/K. So please don't think that BK is a slam dunk for URM's.

-HS type (private prep, parochial, public, magnet)
-In state or OOS
-W and UW GPAs
-SAT or ACT
-Where else were they accepted?

well, I can tell you who did NOT get one
public magnet
in-state
weighted 4.8 GPA
1580 SAT
14 APs

Are you talking about my kid?
Our stats also include - Asian-American male. CS Honors. Prepaid MD Trust. 400K HHI. I did not think we would qualify in any way for UMD. And if he would have been given a merit scholarship, we would have declined the monetary part.

Is your dc accepted to honors at UMD?

Sorry I see CS honors.

Yes, UMD CS honors. It seems they are not giving it to many in-state magnet kids with good HHI or savings. I understand the logic because monetarily this scholarship should go to kids who need it. In fact, I am all for having some more scholarships for students who have potential but may not have very high stats.

Still, a part of me would have liked the honor and a token scholarship of $1. Similar to how for most people, NMSF is for the honor and not the scholarship. And yet, it can be life changing for someone who has no money because so many colleges will give tuition, board and stipend.

I don’t think HHI is the issue because it is merit aid.
Most likely they don’t want to give all the merit aid to students from few top magnet schools.

The two people I know who have gotten the full ride BK have not financial need. Both white, one boy and one girl.

Yes, BK is given regardless of the family's financial status.

Similar: 1570 SAT, 4.86 W, 8 APs, 8 upper level magnet classes at or beyond AP. At least we're not alone

My kid has similar stats, and didn't get into honors, but got accepted to the engineering school. Got invited to Scholars program, which my kid is not hugely excited about. This process is a mystery to me. Older DD didn't even get accepted to UMD engineering school as an undergrad, yet got accepted to an extremely competitive grad engineering program. Go figure.
