Yes, if your kid is invited, (s)he already won at least 1/2 BK. Interview will decide full vs. 1/2.

Our stats also include - Asian-American male. CS Honors. Prepaid MD Trust. 400K HHI. I did not think we would qualify in any way for UMD. And if he would have been given a merit scholarship, we would have declined the monetary part.

Getting the B/K letter means that you're a B/K Semifinalist. Showing up for the interview makes you a Finalist. Getting the results of the interview (either full or partial scholarship) makes you a B/K Scholar. The partial award is not half of the total cost of attendance. It is $8,000/yearly for in-state and $12,000/yearly for OOS, plus a book allowance ($1200) for both. -signed, mom of a B/K Scholar

Yes, UMD CS honors. It seems they are not giving it to many in-state magnet kids with good HHI or savings. I understand the logic because monetarily this scholarship should go to kids who need it. In fact, I am all for having some more scholarships for students who have potential but may not have very high stats.

Still, a part of me would have liked the honor and a token scholarship of $1. Similar to how for most people, NMSF is for the honor and not the scholarship. And yet, it can be life changing for someone who has no money because so many colleges will give tuition, board and stipend.

Yes, UMD CS honors. It seems they are not giving it to many in-state magnet kids with good HHI or savings. I understand the logic because monetarily this scholarship should go to kids who need it. I don’t think HHI is the issue because it is merit aid.
Most likely they don’t want to give all the merit aid to students from few top magnet schools.

tough for white/asian kids getting bk with stats driven app. for URMs much easier and do not require same level of stats. before anyone jumps on me, keep in mind banneker/key used to two separate scholarship - one solely focused on black students and the other "purely" merit. some white kid sued and won and UMD ended up combining two but still live by the spirits of original intent
