It is random lottery at that level, DC’s friend with similar stat got invite, nothing very special about that kid

Def not a lottery. Don’t be bitter.

Income. If you family income is over 400k you ain’t getting jack

Hahaha… why 400?

Not true- did not complete fafsa and my child received presidential scholarship

What difference does that make? UMD hasn’t changed their merit aid policy.

My DC told me that the BK invites are only partially out, that more invites are coming out next week. Anyone know if that's true?

Neither of our children got B-K. Both were honors. One child's roommate had B-K. I think it could be accomplishments but I also think a factor is convincing the students to attend UMD rather than an elite private college. One down side of B-K if you get the full-ride - our child's roommate who had B-K had to live on-campus for all four years to keep the full scholarship.

oh. Didn't know that part.

Yeah. Our DC got Pres scholarship for 1/2 ride but not B-K. Their roommate got full-ride B-K and had to live in dorms for four years, while DC was able to move to apt junior year after finishing honors program.

But they don't have to. On campus housing is guaranteed which is not the same as they "have to" live in dorms for four years. My kid (full B/K) didn't.

Speak for yourself. UMD was a safety school for DS. He got merit elsewhere (more than half tuition) where he would have preferred to attend over UMD. He ended up at a top 20 and would never have had the same experiences at UMD where he would be with a lot of the same people from his neighborhood. He wanted to be further away from home at a top university that has name recognition and prestige...oh and great football too

Our 529 had over $300K when he started and we depleted it. Money well spent. Our net worth is over $10M, so we will be fine lol.

DD say the same thing, I told her this is being very immature but you seem to proud of this

DC went to UMD instead of T20 schools because of merit aid at UMD and great opportunity with honors. MCPS grad from W school and almost never saw anyone from HS. It's a big campus, so that's not a good reason. If name recognition and prestige matter to you and money doesn't, go for it. Someone needs to take those high-priced slots.

Was this a long time ago? My DD has the full BK scholarship. She lived on campus freshman and sophomore years. For junior year, she lived in an apartment off-campus. The amount that the university allows her for housing got deposited in her school account, then transferred to automatic deposit in her bank. DD is class of '24.

Are the interviews still over Zoom these days? That's a shame. The Banneker Key luncheon that was the same day as the interviews pre-COVID really was lovely.

No they are in person. It’s a whole day affair. My older child interviewed in 2021 and it was just a zoom meeting. I think I gave a wrong date above. My child interviews Feb 22 and that is the first day. I think the 18th is wrong.

Thanks. How did you hear. My DC got the invite, but has not heard anything since then.
