Vanishing Georgetown

- Au Pied de Cochon?

Yes, in the late 90s, my friends and I would go there after bar hopping. I wasn't there when it happened, but Mike Tyson dined one late night and maybe started a fight? It was news back then.

I haven't even spent all that much time in Georgetown, but I do remember the bathrooms at Mie n U.

Au pied was great. Party all night and then go jam your face with breakfast food. Who was the Russian spy who supposedly had a shot there before they defected? What was that story? Also just out of Georgetown the Dome or Do Me as we called it!

Lol, had forgotten all about the Do Me!

It attracted lots of Marines from 8th and I.

Robert Hanssen was the FBI agent who was spying to get money to buy gifts for a DC stripper.

Third Edition, Garretts and the Fishmarket. Ah, the early 80's. Upstairs at Garrett's was the place for all preppy kids between 21 and 24.

Yes! Open all night. I had my first lobster there-- $5.99!!! Loved that place.

I remember going there after being out drinking, ordering a glass of water or a coke and asking for bread and butter! Usually one or two people at the table would order actual food.

Chadwicks also figured in spy games: https://www.mentalfloss.com/article/12253/5-restaurants-where-spy-games-were-played. And other DC restaurants that had the code name Chez Espionage!

I think I used to order a croque monsieur. If you say it wasn't on the menu, then I take it back.

Hootie and the Blowfish played a Halloween party there before their first big hit. Remember thinking they were a fun band, but not much else... and had no idea I'd seen them play live until I noticed the name on a plastic souvenir cup I still use to scoop our dog's kibble out of the bin.

I was at that show! And I still have my cup too, LOL.

Two of my most memorable concerts were at The Bayou. Went to Anastasia's a few times. Many memories of Mister Days in the alley. Though I feel like every time I went to a bar in Georgetown, the next time I went to go it had closed or changed names.

The Mike Tyson incident at Au Pied de Cochon was 1998. Basically he got into a yelling match with 2 women.

"In the wee hours of Sunday, March 1, at Georgetown’s Au Pied de Cochon—a bistro and breakfast joint at the corner of Wisconsin Avenue and Dumbarton Street NW—Tyson came across Cole and Butts. According to papers filed by their attorney, Dwight Pettit, Cole and Butts were with their buddy, local comedian Michael Colyar, after hanging out at downtown nightclub DC Live. They ran into Tyson’s party and decided to sit together ..."

Neighborhood Bully by Jake Tapper in the City Paper: https://washingtoncitypaper.com/article/275144/neighborhood-bully/

Jake Tapper is now the CNN anchor, but back then he was a City Paper reporter who wrote "I Dated Monica Lewinsky." He met her at Stetson's playing pool. For the date, he took her to Roxanne's in Adams Morgan. Then he went out of town ... and came back to headlines.

That was a nice bookstore. The last time I was there, randomly the retired Senator Arlen Spector was there doing a book reading which I think was an autobiography. He was mostly telling jokes about conspiracy theories around the Kennedy assassination commission. I remember it distinctly because there was maybe 40 chairs set up and like 5 people in the audience. I felt sad for him. From self-important Senator to irrelevant old guy publicly rambling about the past.

+1

Haven't thought of these places in years, thank you for the reminder and the smile!

Does anyone here go that far back - to Western High?

Yes, I do!

Rive Gauche restaurant — where my Dad took me for my first over the top elegant restaurant meal.
Germaine’s (more Glover Park). the American Cafe. Up Against the Wall. Britches.

Up Against the Wall
Mr Smith’s
Conran’s
The Japanese hibachi place in Georgetown park
That silver jewelry & Knick nack store in Georgetown park where bill Clinton went Christmas shopping more than once
The guards
Betsy Johnson (bought a prom dress there)
Commander Salamander (bought doc martins there and then never felt edgy enough to wear them)
It’s recent but I actually miss being able to grab coffee at dean and DeLuca
