Oh, the freaking melodrama of it all.

Seriously. KN95 and KN94 masks are legitimately more comfortable than a cloth mask. I've worn them for 8-10 hour shifts without any issue. They are clearly effective in my experience. My kids are 3 and 7 and they have absolutely no problem with them.

And that person should not speak for for all adults. If that's the hill you will die on, you need to find a better hill.

Totally agree. The only people saying they're not comfortable either have never worn them or wear them for a week straight when they should have been thrown out days ago, so of course they're hard to breathe in. My K and 2nd graders stopped complaining about masks after we switched to KN95. I wear mine for 8 hours at work, too. The kids wear a new mask every day, I wear the same mask twice in one week.

Are you crazy? They're so much more comfortable and easier to breathe in than a cloth mask. You've clearly never tried one.

+1 so much more comfortable than sweaty steamy cloth. Similar to the difference between cloth diapers and disposable I’d imagine.

No thank you. These are unnecessary. Also these masks are not meant for children. Do not put that on my kid.

The masks are to help mitigate against a worldwide pandemic that has killed over 825K Americans, not a “cold.”

How well did they work in Germany? They have been mandatory there for a year. Masks aren’t stopping Covid.

People like you is why I pulled my kid from ACPS this year in part because of its poor COVID mitigation approach. Otherwise, I would have to do everything I could to fight your “fight to death” in favor of extreme selfishness and putting your child, your child’s classmates and teachers, and the community at large at risk.

DP
For heaven's sake. You are arguing over sending a kid in with a cloth mask versus an N95 mask? Are you one of those nutters who has been holed up in their homes for the past 22 months? Because you know that if you venture outside, then you will put your family and "the community at large" at risk?

Probably. And their children will need therapy for the rest of their lives just to function in normal society. Good work!

I’m not putting my kid in those.

MCPS and ACPS have never said they will require KN95 masks like the privates are doing. They said they will be distributing to staff and students. If you want to keep sending your student in a piece of cheesecloth, that is still your right. Many families of students who live with vulnerable relatives (elderly or newborns) would be grateful to receive masks that would help protect for several more hours. This will reduce the viral load and despite an exposure, a student might not contract Covid and infect grandma in a time when hospitals are overwhelmed.

Not this whataboutism again. Do you not wear a seatbelt? Drive a car that has no airbags or an anti-lock braking system? Choose to drive with no mirrors, lights, bumpers? It is certainly worthwhile to encourage folks to take an extra preventative measure that may alleviate strain on hospitals.

Do you really want to get into a car accident while hospitals are now allowed to waive bed licensing requirements to increase bed capacity?

There are too many car accident deaths (42K in 2020) but still significantly less than Covid.

But these are disposable masks. Are they going to buy millions and millions of disposable masks? That's disgusting and wasteful.

ACPS isn't even sharing how many cases there are in schools or the school district. Remember the ACPS Covid dashboard that was to be updated every Monday no later than 4 p.m.? It was last updated December 27th. I get that there was winter break and then a snow closure, but c'mon. Other districts are updating their dashboards (and with a lot more detail!) It's ridiculous that ACPS is playing the hide the ball with this info (or do they not even know?)

Thanks for noticing this! I read in a school newsletter that ACPS is revising the dashboard to adjust for new CDC guidance. Anyhow, they should really get it updated quick.

Why does it matter how many cases are in schools? They put daily case data for all of Alexandria online.

I think school data is very important for parents to assess the risk their children face in school. For a lot of kids, school probably is the primary place where the kids are interacting indoors with non family members right now.
