LOL at "it's not for everyone." Apparently it's for everybody BUT your son. Notre Dame's 98 percent freshmen retention rate is higher than every university in the country but two: MIT and University of Chicago.

Rating a school based mainly on its location is shallow imho. ND has so much to offer, the location shouldn't matter. Chicago nearby is a nice-to-have.

+1 As a parent, I view this as less distractions and opportunities to spend money. Focus on bonding with classmates, football games, and studies. Love it.

Yea, I really don't get this argument. South Bend isn't the greatest city on earth, but how is being on the outskirts of a city that isn't great any worse than being on the outskirts of nothing? Many of the nation's top colleges and universities are in the middle of nowhere.

The (often rich) smart Catholic kids who get into ND these days could have their pick of an Ivy, Duke or Stanford -- they don't bother. They want to be at Notre Dame.

My DC attends a Catholic school, although we are not Catholic, and this is SO true. For many Catholic families, Notre Dame is the dream school. The Ivy’s are fallbacks.

I love how you trolls make it sound like unimpressive idiots get into Notre Dame in 2021. Look at the kids from Sta, GPS, SJC (non-athlete) who go to Notre Dame -- we're talking top 10 overall.

Lol... I'm Catholic and ND definitely does not play with the Ivies or Stanford... LOL.

True. They don't even apply to Ivies.

It sounds like common sense is maybe not your son's strong suit? Did he.....not realize that South Bend gets cold and is not a big city before he committed to the school? I don't get it.

(Besides, Notre Dame has the second highest freshman retention rate of any college in the entire country.)

Admittedly, if DC had a choice of UChicago, Princeton or ND we would all choose ND.

As a Notre Dame graduate, I cannot begin to fathom why. I would have taken Univ of Chicago or Princeton over Notre Dame in a heartbeat. I didn’t get in to either but obviously did at ND.

This was our son. He had the stats to reasonably apply. DH is Yale alum and has graduate degree from Harvard and really pushed DC to apply at least to Yale. Even after touring Yale, he didn’t want to bother with the effort of the three additional essays. He was 100% ND.

40% of those accepted to both schools attend Notre Dame over Chicago. https://www.parchment.com/c/college/tools/college-cross-admit-comparison.php?compare=University+of+Chicago&with=University+of+Notre+Dame

Well the person asserting that students do not choose ND over Chicago. "This is just not true."
