Should we just stop having public school board meetings?

Um, because the boards conduct public business subject to public open meetings laws.

yes, they'd have to change the rules about meetings, but I don't blame the thought. Some folks can't seem to control themselves. I wouldn't want to be a BOE member with all the threats and low pay.

While there have been some over the top responses, can you really blame the parents? Some B's of E are making terrible decisions and harming kids. It's only natural for parents to want to protect their kids.

Can you give an example? Thanks

CRT is a big one.

Oh I would love to hear about how you think teaching CRT happens in schools.

I have yet to hear a specific example of this.

Kendi's Stamped is being taught in a lot of schools and is classic CRT.

In Virginia? A quick Google search lists the following and I did not scroll down more than two pages, there are more listed.

Chesapeake Public Schools

Henrico County “OneHenrico” has an actual book club devoted to “Stamped”

You've got Google but I took the liberty of saving you 30 seconds. Fairfax County for starters. https://thefederalist.com/2020/09/30/fairfax-va-school-district-spent-24000-on-ibram-kendi-books-for-u-s-history-classes/

Over here in MoCo we've got a lot of schools teaching this racist garbage unfortunately. Hoover and Cabin John Middle Schools for sure. I have personal experience with the one and our son's friend attends the other.

So you see, CRT is spreading like Covid and needs to be stopped.

yes.. what the BOE are doing does not threaten lives.

Some of the parents have threatened the BOE, egged their homes, slashed tires, etc.. That's insane. Great role models they are to their kids.

Are we going to judge a group by what a subset does and then restrict their freedoms?

Isn’t that special.

It is terrifying to me that people are so uneducated in history and civics that they would even suggest that we stop having school board meetings.

Short of violence or threats of violence, school board meetings MUST welcome public discourse. Debate, arguing — even yelling — is our first amendment right.

Justice William Brennan famously stated in the celebrated libel law decision New York Times Co. v. Sullivan (1964):

“Thus we consider this case against the background of a profound national commitment to the principle that debate on public issues should be uninhibited, robust and wide open and that it may well include vehement, caustic and sometimes unpleasantly sharp attacks on government and public officials.”

They aren't uneducated or ignorant. They know exactly what they are doing. They want to push their insane and often racist agendas without anyone knowing what they are doing. This makes them evil.

We've had 3 posts on where Stamped is being taught in K-12 schools and no woke progressive has come back to defend Stamped as "not CRT because CRT is only taught in law school." We're waiting.

No one is silencing the parents. That is a lie.

If you were at the June 2021 SB meeting, you know it wasn't safe for the SB members or the people who disagreed with the rabid racist crowd.

You have many ways to communicate with the SB and other parents.

School board members aren’t in physical danger anywhere in this country. They just don’t like hearing dissenting opinions.

If they don’t like people disagreeing with them, they’re free to quit. No one will miss them.

So you're sure this woman is lying?

Well, let’s see, there was that whole closing school for over a year based on no scientific evidence thereby screwing moms and kids thing…..

Well, that’s a lie, but thank you for being Exhibit A.

They don’t have to quit, and they don’t have to provide a public forum for slavering hysterical loons either. Sorry.

Please point out where in the Constitution it says that school boards are required to give a public forum to anyone. Hint: It’s not there.

What if the process is democratised more. What if every month there is a vote where an important policy decision is decided by parent ( one vote per enrolled child). Have the vote on a Saturday morning so as many working parents can attend as possible. Hold them frequently in community centres in disadvantaged areas if possible.

When parents feel listened to the temperature should go down.
