Should we just stop having public school board meetings?

Um, because the boards conduct public business subject to public open meetings laws.

yes, they'd have to change the rules about meetings, but I don't blame the thought. Some folks can't seem to control themselves. I wouldn't want to be a BOE member with all the threats and low pay.

While there have been some over the top responses, can you really blame the parents? Some B's of E are making terrible decisions and harming kids. It's only natural for parents to want to protect their kids.

If they aren’t following procedures, are becoming belligerent and disrupting meetings then yes, I blame them.

It's actually the school boards who aren't following procedures. They are cutting people off and not allowing people to speak because they don't want to hear what parents have to say.

Exactly. It's shocking and frightening how many people on here think school boards don't need to be accountable or transparent.

Democracy dies in darkness.

Unfortunately the once solar Washington Post is about as bright as a 15 watt bulb.

They are not required to host a public comment portion.

Instead of grandstanding, people can visit office hours and/or write letters.

The public comments portions of School Board meetings are important. Even if the school board members don't listen, and most tune out and think of England or something, it's a forum for community members to openly share their concerns and grievances in public. By doing so, they let other parents and community members know they aren't alone. The people who want to silence parents are dangerous and must be actively opposed.

Sure. Let's allow congress and state and local legislatures to do the same. We'll be North Korea in a decade.

+1

Seriously op?

No way it will take a decade.

The funny thing about that whole "transparency" issue is that in Loudoun they were transparent but the rwnjs weren't paying attention. They didn't participate until policies were being set. Nothing was hidden like they like to make it seem. Our old school board, different stoy.

No one is silencing the parents. That is a lie.

If you were at the June 2021 SB meeting, you know it wasn't safe for the SB members or the people who disagreed with the rabid racist crowd.

You have many ways to communicate with the SB and other parents.

School board members aren’t in physical danger anywhere in this country. They just don’t like hearing dissenting opinions.

If they don’t like people disagreeing with them, they’re free to quit. No one will miss them.

It hasn’t even been a week since the superintendent flat out lied during a meeting

Can you give an example? Thanks

Kimberle Crenshaw personally came to my house and made my child think about intersectionality. He's been seeing a therapist ever since.

Just stream the meetings. That way everyone can watch them in a safe and comfortable environment. Those who want to ask questions can do so.

I feel terrible for the parents who are good faith and go to the meetings because they genuinely care about their kids' education only to have to endure a meltdown by some anti-vaxxer or someone who is mad the schools observe Martin Luther King Day.

Why should we allow this at SB meetings?

Huh? I don’t agree with the public speaker, but it was entirely inappropriate for the school board to interrupt her while reading the excerpt from the book.

I don't know that it was... it seems like if this topic needs to be addressed and discussed, it should be done in a forum restricted to 18+, e.g. a separate public comment period. If you want to argue 13+ because technically HS kids have access to this book in the library, then you are conflating "some kids have access to these materials if they explicitly seek them out" with "let's read this out loud to everyone".

I'm curious what the library checkout records are on these materials... what percentage of students are _actually_ going and checking out the books in question? Technically they could read without checking out, I'm majorly skeptical that any kids are sneaking around the library just to read a few text passages when they could was more easily obtain illicit imagery or videos elsewhere (if they're so inclined).

Oh I would love to hear about how you think teaching CRT happens in schools.
