Lawrence nn Wren?

There was a male Wren in my high school decades ago and the students nicknamed him Sparrow.

I know a Lawrence whose mom tried to nickname him Laurie. He nixed that nickname after the first day of kindergarten and goes by Larry.

I also know a few Terences who go by Terence. I think people would call him Lawrence without a problem.

Laurie for Lawrence must have come from Little Women.

Wren is a girl’s name…and it’s a dark name.

Any of those names grab you?

I’ll never understand why people choose a name based off of the perceived nickname- it makes no sense. If you like the name Lawrence then name your son that or name him Ren.

You could name him Loren as an option of both

My brother tried this with his son and of course it didn't work. His name is something like "Daniel Gilligan" and my brother wanted everyone to call him "Gill" but, he's just Daniel or Danny. The "Gill" thing lasted maybe a week. I think nicknames that evolve organically tend to stick better.

I like it. Are your child what you think great. Don’t worry about what others would or wouldn’t name theirs. Kids won’t think an thing of it with the wide diversity of names out there.

There are many kids born to graduates of W&M named Wren.

Really struggling coming up with a boy name I like. I like classical names. We have somewhat settled on Nathaniel but it doesnt feel quite right and I dont love it with our last name which also starts with N. Im liking Lawrence because it feels dignified but warm and also underused. But he would mainly go by Wren, which I know is a girls name also. But it doesnt bother me that it is gender neutral.

Sister is Caroline.

LOL! If you name him Lawrence, it won't be up to you what his nickname is. It will be up to the kids at school--thankfully, in this case, since Wren is not a gender-neutral name, it is a girl's name.

They will call him Larry. If you don't like the name Larry, don't use this name. Seriously.

That's my feeling. Name him Lawrence if you like the names Lawrence and Larry. Or, if you want him to go by Wren, then name him Wren.

Do not name- or call- a boy Wren

I knew a little boy named Lawrence years ago. He went by Lawrence. I don't remember anyone thinking it odd or too long. It's only two syllables.

There is always Laurie, which is cute in a Little Women way.

I love the name Lawrence, but don't like Larry. But it's not true that nicknames are inevitable. I know a Thomas who has always been Thomas never Tom/my. He is 20 now, so it is safe to say he escaped with his name.

And I know an adult Lawrence who goes by Lawrence, except some people call him by an initial nn, LJ.

Lawrence nn Ren is very cool IMHO.

David Foster and Katharine McPhee named their kid Rennie and I keep thinking Ren would have been way better.

dp They did name him Ren. Rennie is the nn!
