I'm not sure where you're getting your info, but it's not very easy to get in, even in-state.  Comparing to UNC-CH, it looks like UVA has a somewhat lower admit rate for in-state, and a slightly higher admit rate for out of state.

No, they don't have a 50/50 shot, the acceptance rate for in-state is more like 40%. The thing to consider about that, though, is that it's become so tough to get in that your average student in Northern Virginia, who 20 years ago would have had a pretty good shot at getting in, isn't even bothering to apply anymore. It's mostly top students applying, and still only 40% of them (or less in some counties) are getting in. If you want odds closer to 50/50, you have to move downstate. Like it said in the WaPo article, 92% of a recent freshman class was in the top 10% of their class. Does that really not sound competitive to you?[/quote]
