He has a superstar lawyer, the general public’s support, and if he is half as nice and smart as everyone says, he will eventually get parole. If he even gets sentenced in the first place. NYC is AOC and Bernie land sprinkled with some 0.1%ers. All it takes is one sympathetic juror for jury nullification.

I just don’t see a nullification happening. He didn’t even have UHC, and never was a client. This CRO and UHC have had zero interactions with him and his healthcare. He just went after that particular CEO at random because he was a part of “the system.”

But it’s going to be very, very hard to find a jury of people who haven’t had very negative experiences with health insurance, either to them or someone in their family.

Idk. He has become wildly popular across the entire country, shockingly so. There is such an outpouring of rage and fury going on now. I do not think this will be an easy black and white case for a prosecutor.

I mean, I agree with you. He committed a horrible crime. I want him to be tried and go to prison.

But this thread is just striking to me in how incredibly far out of touch it is. We saw this with the election too. I knew Trump was going to win, as did any one who consumed media and had deep personal contacts outside of the DCUM bubble. And the same thing is going on here. DCUM is full of people adjacent to the victim here. So this thread is full of people genuinely confused about why anyone would support Luigi. However, outside of the DCUM bubble, many people are wildly supportive of Luigi, and they know all the facts you listed out and do not care.

There are votive candles being sold in flea markets with him on it as a saint — patron saint of health care denials, patron saint of the ill. “Deny, defend, depose” is showing up in graffiti, in songs, in clubs, in bars, at freaking sporting events across the country. All social media is filled with FreeLuigi hashtags. Publications have to shut down the comment sections of any article condemning the killing because so many people support it. And on and on and on.

Once again I want to be crystal clear that I 100% do not support Luigi. He need to be tried and what he did was absolutely wrong. I have zero sympathy for people who kill others. But people here do not understand how this event is being experienced outside of the 1%. He is seen as a hero martyr by many, many people.

It’s more of meme culture because he’s hot and on Goodreads, Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, Tinder, etc. Everyone scooped up his profile the first few hours it was released and it shut down.

It was also an internet meme culture that speculated that it was a HC vendetta killing when they got Thompsons name. Before shooter was found and named.

But ultimately the motive and circumstances will come out in the trial.

He was a nice, smart guy who disappeared and re-appeared a targeted shooter.

Meme culture is only online. But this has escaped outside of the internet.

What is interesting to me from a sociological perspective is that Luigi’s popularity feels a lot like the furious populism that drove the Trump election. Again, that was not a surprise to anyone who was actually listening. But it was a total shock to mainstream media and a lot of DCUM. I sense that same disconnect and gap here.

So he took his father’s semi automatic weapon and started shooting strangers down the street because he was convinced the government had them reading his “brainwaves”.

Calm down. Nobody here (not speaking about the larger world) is saying it is okay. But trial is trial, and I expect there will be some sort of use of insanity as a defense if it’s possible. We should be able to rationally talk about that without you and other freaking out about how that means people are endorsing murder or whatever. Insanity as a defense has a long history in American jurisprudence. You are going to have to deal with that fact.
