On his way to the annual investors' conference. Cannot believe it.

Only 50 years old.... I wonder if it was a motived killing or random? I guess time will tell. |
Obviously motivated. This is not the scenario (location, single target, distance) of someone who grabs a gun and shoots a single random victim due to internal demons. The question is what was the motivation, and was it a murder for hire by someone else. |
unfortunately people get killed in robberies all the time, and early morning robberies aren’t uncommon. |
Well two weeks ago three people were stabbed, two to death, by an insane person all over Manhattan. Chelsea, Midtown... nice neighborhoods. So, I wouldn't jump to conclusions. |
this is horrifying. |
"A gunman, who investigators tell CNN was waiting for some time before Thompson’s arrival, opened fire from 20 feet away firing multiple times, striking Thompson. The 50-year-old was shot in the chest and was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, according to the NYPD"
https://www.cnn.com/2024/12/04/us/brian-thompson-united-healthcare-death/index.html I'd be shocked if that weren't targeted unless the facts are very different than what's being reported now. |
Yes, that doesn't sound like a robbery attempt or a random shooter. |
They are reporting that the killer was waiting there for several hours… |
Agreed. Not random, not a robbery. This was targeted. |
I could see it being a dad of a kid who is sick and whose medicine is not covered by UHC. |
UnitedHealth confirmed on the day of the breach that the cybercriminals behind the attack was a Russia-based ransomware gang known as ALPHV or BlackCat. The group itself claimed responsibility for the attack, alleging it stole more than six terabytes of data, including "sensitive" medical records.
UnitedHealth did now reveal how much — if at all — it paid the hackers to have their systems restored. However, multiple media sources at the time, including Wired Magazine, reported that a ransom payment for the amount of $22 million was made to BlackCat in the form of bitcoin. https://www.cbsnews.com/news/unitedhealth-cyberattack-change-healthcare-hack-ransomware/ |
Definitely sounds targeted. DH thought it was someone whose claim was rejected but I don't know who the heck in that situation would know who the CEO of an insurance company was. He looks like a pretty average guy, too. My guess is it's a personal/relationship thing. Time will tell.

Pretty sure it was someone “angry” at the health insurance industry generally. |
Thes nothing like what happened here. |
