Will Meghan Markle’s Show be a Success?

Where did this myth come from that she had a harsh upbringing?

Idk but I don't think she sees herself this way. She talks about stuff like doing calligraphy and waitressing on the side while trying to make it as an actress, but she has never talked about struggling while growing up the way some other stars have (like Dolly Parton and Hillary Swank). This "rags to riches" story that some posters keep alluding to didn't come from anything MM has ever said.

I don't think Meghan Markle had a plush upbringing. Her mother had drug addiction problems and her father was a blue collar lightning director in Hollywood. He made enough money to rent them a house in Los Angeles but her mother was struggling.

The only reason she went to her private high school is because her father won the lottery and decided wisely to spend most of it on her education. She was certainly the poorest kid in her school and did not grow up with massive wealth.

She was around people with a lot of wealth and power but she was always on the precipice. She has spent all of her adulthood climbing the ladder and is now solidly upper class and a world elite as the daughter in law of the English king.

You know who does an amazing job at this? Jennifer Garner. That’s a show I’d watch. I love her short cooking videos.

I’m not a fan of MM and don’t find her relatable at all. So this show will be a pass for me.

Why does she need to be relatable? Please list a cooking how host who's relatable.

Ina Garten

I don't know that I fine Ina relatable. She is very likable but her life is very unlike mine and most of what she does in her kitchen is well beyond my skills.

I listened to an interview with her around Thanksgiving where she described her Thanksgiving dinner and then stated that she makes two full dinners so that she can send all her guests home with a full suite of leftovers so that they can enjoy that the next day. The interviewer was like "are you suggesting other people do that?" and she was like "no of course not, but I'm a professional entertainer -- of course I do things the average home cook is not going to to do." It wasn't relatable but it was honest and she's right -- if she was just ultra-relatable then she probably wouldn't have much to teach anyone. The whole point of people like her and Martha is they are way better and more experienced at all of this than most people and therefore can offer a sort of aspirational vision and some tips and tricks. But can an achieve what Ina does just by watching her show? Of course not. Please.

I’ve made many of Ina’s recipes. I find her execution to be very simple and unpretentious. The olive oil she uses isn’t expensive lol. I also send guests home with leftovers, especially my sister with 3 kids vs my one. All adults now.

My son has become the newest cook in our family. He’s been feeding his college roommates for a while. They pay for the ingredients.

My niece who hosted her 1st xmas requested I make an entree x 2. One included sausage because my nephew is a meat eater, and the other without to pair with her chicken marsala dish. She was overwhelmed when we got there and my son (her cousin) jumped in. They both love to cook and tap recipes from Ina, Martha and Giada, raging Ramsey + GenZ Instagram accounts. Young ones with old souls, I guess.

Meghan is not even in the same league as Ina. Ina worked at the White House and in budgeting and writing policy papers on nuclear energy. Then she ran the very successful Barefoot Contessa business where a lot of her recipes come from. Not to mention a best selling author. Ina isn't everyone's cup of tea, she's not exactly warm and fuzzy, but she's certainly accomplished and respected. I like her recipes, they aren't that complicated and they always turn out well. So many others are unreliable or hit or miss. Meghan is just jumping in with both feet into something she has no expertise or experience in. Her few fans may be into it because they like her but not sure why anyone else would be interested.

So, I think the thing about a lot of people who like these types of shows, stuff like Alison Roman and Crissy Tiegen (spelling?) and Martha, is that we are COMFORTABLE in the kitchen. We are not watching to then turn off the tv and go follow a recipe to the letter, wondering if it will turn out, hoping the cake will be beautiful and taste wonderul for our dinner party. We are just people who love beautiful things and food and making, and we f*&K around in the kitchen all the time putting raspberries on a cake because it's a Tuesday and we felt like it. I would guess that very few people who are talented, comfortable, and genuinely interested in this stuff are using recipes often. We feel, we experiment, we get general inspiration from shows and media and pictures and just...have fun with it.

This doesn't really resonate with me. I like the cooking shows, but not the celebrity ones. I'd rather watch Great British Bake Off instead of the next new celebrity pretending they know their way around a kitchen. Also not interested in celebrity home renovation shows or anything else people with no real background dabble in and their claim to fame is acting or singing. Most of these shows are very short lived.

Even with Trump there is far less racism in the US than Meghan or her kids experienced in London as part of the BRF. A lot of the stuff Harry's family or the British press said about Meghan and her kids would be considered inappropriate even by Trump. That's how bad it was.

I agree that she faced a lot of racism in the UK, but it's also true that she is disliked by many people during and after London because of her life choices and the way she presents herself. Her rubbing people the wrong way doesn't need to be tied to racism.

Why do all female celebrities become cooks or lifestyle gurus?

Honestly, same. I have zero idea why haters are obsessed with her.

I’m not interested. Not sure what the target audience is for this.

Because they have no real talents, and those things can be faked.

Dad was such a jerk he… worked his ass off to send her to fantastic private schools from pre-K thru university.

In her letter to Congress regarding parental leave, she talks about how hard her parents had to work to afford the $4.99 salad bar at the Sizzler. She’s always implied that her family growing up was poor/struggling.

Ina is a queen who has legitimacy to her throne. She’s been working in the food industry for 40 years and her show is authentic bc cooking is what she loves to do and that comes through when you watch. This show is a last ditch effort for MM. I bet she has a team of ppl who whipped up all of the recipes and gimmicky shenanigans for the show. Do you think she’s making focaccia all day long at home? Hell no! I don’t dislike Meghan but this is pathetic. She needs to be in the spot light every minute to feel relevant. Focus on your kids and the good you can do for the world!
