I don’t think the Housing First model requires private vouchers. People are lumping those things together. Permanent Supportive Housing *should* be in dedicated buildings staffed 24/7 by the appropriate security and services. |
Can you post a link to this please? |
For everyone who wants to make a change on this, and work toward making our community safer, I propose that in addition to chatter here we need to 1) engage in the process (see this tweet from Brooke Pinto https://twitter.com/CMBrookePinto/status/1703726238311891179/photo/2 - I haven't read all of the legislation, but if there are gaps we need to lobby Frumin and even Pinto to include our issues) and 2) send our concerns to local papers. I plan to submit my letter to Frumin in some form to the WaPo among others.
Its clear we can't rely only on our representatives with current engagement - we need to use all the tools in our toolbox to get thisdone. I don't see MoCo as much safer at least from a raising a child in public schools standpoint (See the recent violence at various games etc) so at least for the time being I plan to stay put and aggressively engage in the process here. I believe in our little hamlet, and I think we can get back to a good place - but it will not be easy. |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() DC has long survived without your precious Jimmy. It will be fine. Some of us a real city people and others are not. Voucher holders are entitled to housing as a basic human right. If the city had not closed down the St. Elizabeth hospital as a result of Reagan economics and the oppressive policies of the American government against native Indigenous peoples and the African American community. If your family had to deal with generational trauma, you would go crazy. No one should be begrudging voucher people the right to housing. |
Mon, Sep 18 at 8:19 AM This is an important message from the District of Columbia AlertDC system. Alert: Attempt Carjacking Investigation in the 5500 block of Connecticut ave NW. Lookout for gray Volvo S60 VA tag TNH3611 B/F driver and 3B/M passengers. DO NOT TAKE ACTION CALL 911 W/ EVENT #120230528978 Sent to 2nd District (PSA 201-208) Alert DC Sent by MPD Cad # 6123 Elsewhere it was clarified there was a weapon. Happened between 7am and 8am, the alerts are slightly delayed. There would have been people around so close to Starbucks, Safeway, etc but these things happen so quickly. |
I see a lot more MPD and Metro police out and around Connecticut Ave yesterday and today. Looks like the many calls and complaints are finally getting the attention they deserve - let’s hope! |
Too bad people had to get shot and robbed and beaten before they stepped up…. |
Did you see CM Frumin out and about today? LOL, of course not. |
Hope people actually attend this. |
I don’t live in the neighborhood and have no dog in this fight, but how exactly are you going to continue paying for all the nice city things once the tax base (effortlessly) moves to another jurisdiction within a mile or two where they don’t encounter the same problems? A family’s generational trauma doesn’t entitle them to participate in criminal behavior at the expense of residents who pay their own rent. Drug dealing is under the table, BTW. I bet some of those folks make good money. |
I’m not mad about housing people. I am mad that we are a two job household living in a 2 bedroom apartment that has literally turned into section 8 housing. People are living rent free with no jobs and no need to get a job in the same building tearing it up and causing problems. I’d be better off quitting my job and getting a voucher myself. And that’s no joke. |
I'm so sorry for your situation. I used to live in one of those buildings. It makes me sad to see what has become of them. |
Landlords have little ability to control this situation:
(1) it is illegal to refuse to accept voucher tenants and there are plenty of non-profit legal advocates more than happy to try to catch and sue landlords who try to do so. (2) it is extremely difficult in DC to evict a tenant on behavioral issues---it can take years. It is easier (marginally) to evict for non-payment of rent, but voucher tenants are getting their rents paid. Part of the problem is the extremely one-sided tenant friendliness of DC landlord/tenant laws. Financially secure educated tenants on Connecticut Avenue---many of them more than happy to vote for progressives like Frumin---are now seeing firsthand the problems such one-sided laws create. |
