A decent essay? Race is not taken into account. How many times can this be said? They do not have names of the kids or any demographic data except gender. No schools either. |
How do you know? Are you the "different poster"? |
Of course, it is. Look at the pictures on the Blair website. |
How many times do people have to explain that FARMS and ESOL are taken into account which are proxies for race and that in the essays people can reveal their race by talking about their extracurriculars or other topics. The committees also have their biases about what an Asian student might look like versus a non-Asian student. It's ignorant of you to think that there's no systemic biases built into the system. The one time MCPS revealed the races of the selection committee members due to some lawsuit there was not a single Asian person on the selection committees for some of the schools. I think Blair was one of them. |
All the committee gets is student ID, application, 7th grade and quarter 1 8th grade math and science grades, and 7th grade spring MAP-M and 8th grade fall MAP-M. THAT’S ALL!!! You can insist that photos mean that the selection info is wrong but that’s crazy. |
|
I am not saying that the selections were biased. I'm not that PP. But all this bitterness and the misunderstandings and the outright lies are upsetting.
I don't know what a more fair process looks like but I can see how there might be bias in the current system and in the old system. |
Sour grapes. |
If you say so. I'm not saying there is definitely bias. I'm saying you cannot rule it out. My child did get admitted as did DC's friends. I don't even know the kids who did not get admitted. |
It’s also coming from one or two families with kids with very good but not exceptional scores. When kids are on the borderline some will get in and some won’t. Claiming it’s due to race when you are of a race that makes up a very large proportion of invited students is just bitterness talking. |
Are you suggesting that all the Asian kids at TPMS are ESOL or FARMS? Or that the kid that did or didn’t get in are? |
Everyone my daughter knows and expected to be admitted was, with one exception but he wasn’t one of the strongest students. |
I'm sorry but I have seen a number of comments here that TPMS magnet kids are making shareable lists of scores and admits and that is....toxic. Feeling compelled to collect and share that information is just not cool. That's a really bad behavior and cultural practice to feed (I mean culture of the way of thinking...not ethnicity). At a certain point it's not pride anymore: it's exclusivity and intellectual narcissism and it's not even a good luck for super gifted kids. My kid is in the magnet and doesn't participate in this. They have a regular 98/99 MAP, but feel inferior to the kids who boast about 320s. |
There is no list with scores. |
BS. Blair is not the only magnet that’s tough to get in to. RMIB is arguably more difficult, for example. Wheaton engineering accepts a smaller percentage of applicants than Blair. Getting accepted to multiple programs is impressive and does demonstrate that the acceptance at Blair is deserved. |
Of course there is a google doc with scores. Multiple claim to have seen it. Have you met middle schoolers before? |
