RM versus Wooton

WTH are you talking about? Wootton is like half Asian. Or are you one of those insane leftists who count Asians as white (like MCPS does) because if you don't, it destroys the whole "it's white supremacy" narrative that leftists love?

You have all kinds of kids. Not a pressure cooker. If kid wants IB then there are 25 seats reserved for cluster's kid in IB magnet. If they decade then they can join even later in 11th grade. If kid likes AP more then pretty much all AP courses are available.

I can't comment about Wootton.

Agree, RM seems ideal and has the best outcomes of any MCPS HS noticeably better than Wootton. Wootton is a strong school but not in the league.

OP, if you are still here... You can't possibly compare RM and Wootton. Those two schools (unless your kid is in IB) are totally opposite ends of a spectrum. Good lord.

Not at all. The same kid could get a fine education at either school, but with the IB might do even better at RM.

Lack of understanding of importance of peers

dp.. do you think there are no kids at RM outside of IB magnet who take AP classes?

There are. There are many high achieving RM kids who are not in the IB magnet program. They take AP classes. They are involved in all kinds of clubs at the school. There are just more black/brown and low income kids at RM than at Wootton, but RM is also a lot bigger than Wootton, and their building is also in much better shape than Wootton's. Main Street is pretty great. In the winter, after school, lots of RM kids go to RTC to go skating on the ice rink, or hang out at The Spot or the green area at RTC. They go to the library with friends to study.

If you want more diversity, then RM is better than Wootton. If you only want certain types of kids (not brown/black or low income), then Wootton is probably a better fit, though their building looks like it should be condemned.

Wootton doesn't have any IB peers. RM does. Did you know that RM students can take IB classes even if they are not in the magnet program? My sophmore DC is taking an IB math class right now. DC is not in IB. They are planning to take a few more IB classes in the next two years, but not join the IB program. And they are also taking AP classes.

it's never about classes/courses offered. it's always about how kids perform, willing to perform, pushing themselves.

If you read this long thread, you will find plenty of evidence for RM's successful teaching of kids who don't fit the stereotype for academics. See AP scores, etc.

Wooton has a growing and supportive Asian cohort, many from Taiwanese community.

how much more can kids show that they are willing to push themselves by taking IB and AP classes even though they are not in IBDP?

RM has more kids, and more low income kids than Wootton. So, it brings down the averages, but there are a lot of high achieving kids at RM.

I would argue that averages for this sort of thing is less relevant than opportunity that programs like the IB affords.

Agree the peers at RMIB are among the very brightest in the county so even those who simply take IB classes in 11 and 12th benefit from this amazing cohort!

Wootton is like 41% Asian. That's not just growing; it's grown.
