I'm sure. It's also a pretty high level. I had to laugh when I get the email -- there's no way DS would make it there!

I'm sure if you have the $ he could

In most cases $$$ outweighs talent when it comes to travel. From what I heard Bethesda South is committed to putting together a highly competitive teams for 06 so I don't think that they would just take anyone b/c they could pay.

I have plenty of cynicism about youth travel sports, but I would in no way agree with a general statement that money outweighs talent for spots at any established club. Clubs have incentives to get the best talent they can for the top team or two. Winning teams help the clubs' reputations, which puts them in a position to keep recruiting the players they need to keep operations running. If you want to claim that the primary purpose of having a lot of lower level teams at most clubs is to bring in cash, I wouldn't disagree.

I don't know what clubs you're talking about where money buys you a spot on that club's top team. We've had kids in travel soccer for the past 8 years in two different clubs and I've never seen this happen. At least in the clubs where my kids have played, selections are based on technical ability and athleticism (which are inherently subjective, so not everyone will agree with a club's selections or which combination of strengths is what's needed), but it's not like some unathletic and/or unskilled kid can waltz in and be put on top team b/c the parents have money. Does this really happen in the better clubs that field competitive teams? Not sure how they could sustain a good program with that approach.

Exactly. I don't think Bethesda South is designed to be a huge program -- they're loosely affiliated with some Virginia community-based clubs already, so they have a viable feeder system on top of the lure of the Bethesda name and possible Development Academy placement down the road. They're not going to take everyone who can sign a check.

They tryouts last spring were competitive. Not everyone who tried out made the team and they went with short rosters. I think they had a total of 20 kids for two 8v8 teams. The coach could have justifiably taken on more players, but did not.

Regarding the comment on making the team if you have the $, that's a situation that would not be fun for anyone. The coach is demanding and the majority of the kids are exceptional players and extremely committed. A player who lacks this intensity and commitment will not last long in such an environment.

I wrote the above comment and agree with you. Meant to write some and not "most". For BS or established club's top teams, I agree that $ would would win over talent.

WOULD NOT, need to stop pressing submit so quickly.

So if a kid is paying for expensive private training from one of the coaches or directors at a club you don't think that kid will have an advantage at tryouts ? Just having money in general doesn't do you any good, but if your handing over several hundred a month to someone at the club for private training then it means something.

Having a parent on the board Will make a difference for a kid and team placement

Or, extra training, regardless of who provides it can improve a players technical ability? Also, I've only seen one instance of a player getting private training from the coach and in that instance they receive training from multiple places.

Well then, enlighten us. You or someone else advertise try-outs and a goalie here, so please explain to us how they differ. Not saying that they aren't different but you clearly think that they are very different.
