Western High School Boundary Map options (A/B/C/D)

Not explicitly, but they seem to dislike Kyle McDaniel. I think he is the one who thinks that people should be moved from Oak and Skyview. So they have it out for him. I think they have tried to cozy up to Dixit and Maren in the most. But now Dixit is going to be hearing from a bunch of angry Lees Corner parents who know that the only reason they’re in the mix now is because of RIO.

I'm in the area represented by RIO, Crossfield parent, and very much want to zoned to Skyview. With the addition of Skyview there are now FOUR high schools closer/equal to me then Oakton. Skyview is half the distance!

Staying in Oakton means much longer bus rides, less sleep, reduced opportunities for extracurriculars, overall reduced quality of life for 4 years. Not to mention safety.. less than half the amount of time on otherwise dangerous roads means stastically my kids are much less likely to die or be injured! Shame on RIO, they are hurting their own kids.

Also seems the group consists of many folks who don't even have children in the school system , with the misguided perception it will greatly reduce property values. Based on what I've read at this point, seems like Skyview (eventually) will be just as "good" as Oakton if not better.

I know I'm not the only parent who feels this way. We need to do everything we can to get this message to the voting members. RIO doesn't represent our community or school, and they shouldn't be acting as such.

Thanks for speaking up. The concerns I am hearing is that there will be too many Westfield kids at Skyview. That is why a lot of Oakton parents don’t want to be moved. This is starting to feel like rebalancing schools based on SES and not geography.

I am in the same boat as you and agree with you. But these people don’t care if their kids have a reduced quality of life. Oakton is some kind of status symbol for them for reasons I do not understand. They’ve also convinced their children that it would be the end of the world if they can’t go to Oakton and then claiming it’s leading to mental distress. Well, who caused that problem?

What exactly is wrong with Westfield kids?

McDaniel and Frisch spoke up early about sending crossfield to sky view to relieve capacity at Oakton and reduce the ridiculously long bus rides. Good for him for not rolling over to the RIO crowd (all 5 of them).

I have heard people in my Oakton zoned area refer to them as trash and problem kids. In case you had any doubt about what is motivating some of these people.

The rest of South Lakes should be pitching a fit if they care about having advanced courses available to the remaining kids.
Also seems really strange they opt for scenario 2 and do nothing about Oakton being over capacity during a boundary review specifically to address overcrowding.

Absolutely agree with this. No way Meren is going to let this happen to South Lakes. They added a few neighborhoods from Floris to Fox Mill, my bet is they keep Fox Mill at SLHS.

Did Meren attend the meeting?

I presume she had already reviewed scenarios before they were presented to the public.

She did. I spoke with her afterward. She said the school board did not see the maps until they became public and that Reid could have saved herself a lot of headaches by showing them the maps for five minutes so they could tell her all the things that would piss people off. So safe to say, she’s not pleased.

Thanks! Curious about what she will say in the next board meeting.

+1 Oakton is a rich white kid school. As is Crossfield. They don’t want to be moved.

Westfield FARMs rate is around 35-40% and Oakton's is around 10%. Draw your own conclusions on what they mean by "Westfield kids".

Didn't Oakton's freshman football team have a huge incident with SA hazing in their locker room? They were suspended from playing.

Maybe people shouldn't want their kids mixing with "Oakton kids".

It will not be better than Oakton. That's wishful thinking. It will be a solid school, like many others in FCPS. There is nothing wrong with that.

Rooted in Oakton is the ROOT of all redistricting problems.

Better keep Oakton kids at Oakton then.
