MIL tells my kids that instead of gifts she will donate to her chairty of choice

They are in elementary school and middle school. Do they need to write thank you notes?

Nope

What a hateful bitch. I'd give her the finger.

Teach the children to give the finger?

No thank you notes.

I hope you tell her you are doing the same!

It is her money and she wants to contribute to the charities (in your children's names, I presume), so let her.

There is no reason to say anything to her or to her kids. If your kids ask if grandma sent any presents, you can tell them that grandma did not give any presents to them, however, she contributed to some charity of her choice in their names. No need to beat around the bush and no need to make it bigger than what it is.

Your kids should not be writing a "Thank you" note to her, but maybe the charity can do that.

Yes, contribute to Heifer in her honor

Tell your kids that Grandma is thinking of less fortunate people than they, which is OK, and that she still loves them very much. That they already have all they need, and that is why Grandma is doing this.

In private, you can moan about the questionable rationale behind depriving children of their much-anticipated gifts. Does Grandma have an axe to grind or is she going senile?

Ha - yes, please do this. Either she'll be delighted, or she'll get the message - win-win!

This is great! Not all people need or want or want to endorse more consumption. And seeing kids (or parents) greedy for presents is not a legacy anyone wants to have. We are BARELY middle class, but our needs are met and my kids know it. They are 9 and 11 and they would be really happy to get this for a gift. I admit that they are both weirdly interested in social issues and that may not be a reasonable thing for typical kids at that age. Any chance you could convince her to let the kids help choose?

(I should add that my gut feeling is that if she doesn't allow them input then she is just doing this to satisfy her own ego, and that is an ugly thing. All bets are off with how I would couch it with my own kids in that situation.)

You people really take the cake ...
What is wrong with this?
If she is sincere in her gift and teaching your kids about charity and thinking about others. How greedy are you and how greedy are you teaching your kids to be greedy too.
Seriously how much more stuff do your kids really need, how many barbies are enough?
