I was talking to a friend about this earlier today. She said she was spanked and also had her mouth washed out with soap a couple of times as a kid. Maybe it's because I'm young (28) and from the Northeast, but I was pretty surprised. I know that kind of thing was pretty common back in the day, but I didn't know it still happened, or at least not often. I was always talked to or sent to my room when I acted up.
Did you ever get spankings or soap growing up, or did your parents use other methods? And how old are you and what part of the country are you from? |

Nope. We would be grounded. Or once, when my sister got caught smoking, my Mom made her sit down and smoke an entire pack until she got sick. No more smoking after that.

+1. By my father. My mother spanked me once or twice my entire life but it was so tame I would laugh (like one or two swats on my bottom). My father on the other hand, beat me up to the degree of child abuse. As in, beat me with brooms, burned me with cigarettes, made me stand all night in the corner of a room, etc - that kind of thing. I was not the only one to suffer on his hands. |

| Both my parents spanked liberally. I got my mough washed out with soap once. I'm 33, grew up in Potomac. I have a great relationship with my parents and no bad feelings. That said, I don't spank . (Of course, DD is only 3, so I guess that could change some day.) |

Spanked all the time. Switches off forsythia bushes at times. My dad used a belt once. And he punched my brother in the eye once. But not me. Made to sit at dinner table til midnight because I refused to eat what was served. Then sent to bed hungry.
My mother did wash my mouth out wih soap for speaking with the "country" accent of the neighborhood kids. Not even for cursing but for sounding uneducated. Camay does not have much taste, FWIW. Mid 40s. Grew up in the country part of Howard County, MD. |

| I'm 25 and I was spanked if I still misbehaved after being talked to, then sent to time out, the spanked. My mom would never wash our mouths out with soap but I did get a drop of tobasco sauce on my tongue if she heard me cursing. I turned out a well-adjusted adult. Some kids need more than being talked to or sent to time out. I will NEVER advocate child abuse but sometimes spanking is the only way to fix an unwanted behavior. |
