MCPS-Big fail!

Anonymous
DC is in 4th grade at a well regarded "W" cluster school. We are very concerned about the lack of instruction in many subjects but reading, writing and spelling in particular. I recall learning more (and more being demanded of me) back in the 70's in a school that many on here would consider quite undesireable (not a MoCo school). We cannot really afford private, we do whatever we can to supplement, but are very concerned about the education our DC is/is not receiving. I guess MCPS is not all it is cracked up to be-very dissapointed. Also wondering what others are thinking/doing to remedy this issue?

Mcps has always been overrated.

MCPS is getting worse. I don't see it turning around any time soon maybe never. We are seriously thinking about moving to Howard or Loudoun county.

We're in a W zone as well. DS is in PEP in a title 1 school. For K, I'm requesting a waiver from the principal. Since the school is under capacity, no one in the school thinks this will be an issue. I'm planning to keep him there in the small classes until something shows that he's no longer doing well academically or being challenged. Then we'll move to private.

That's my plan-- public until it no longer works.

Is Howard or Loudon any better?-also with 2.0 spreading like a fast growing cancer, will any public school be good anymore?

I assume your PEP school is not in a W cluster?

Perhaps you should move away from Bethesda/Potomac? I read more complaints about Bethesda/Potomac schools on DCUM than about schools anywhere else in MCPS. My children go to unregarded MCPS elementary and middle schools, and I am very happy with the education they've received so far.

Are there any Title 1 elementary schools in the Churchill, Whitman, Wootton, or Walter Johnson clusters?

I think the issue is with MCPS and their curriculum as a whole-I think the same curriculum is taught across the board. The issue is not where the school is or who is attending, that being said I can only imagine it being worse, in a school where the there will be socio-economic and lack of diversity issues as well.

MCPS can't handle the influx of new comers.

We're not in a W cluster, and my kids are learning quite a bit with Curriculum 2.0.

I know my children's reading levels. I know what they're doing in the classroom. They're still reinforcing the basics. My K has HW on a daily basis - with additional work each week, depending upon the current unit.

It's not the curriculum; it's how well the administration and teachers understand the program. A principal who's not an instructional leader will not be able to set expectations for his/her staff in terms of finding that balance btw reinforcing the basics and stretching kids to think critically.

We're thrilled with our public, and we made the move from private to public last year.

Would you mind sharing which school? or at least which cluster? thanks

Are you highly educated? Bethesda is home to the most highly educated population in the nation; we're very picky about the schools. I'm sure if Bethesdans lived in your cluster, they'd complain too. The curriculum is the same throughout MCPS - we are just more aware of its shortcomings.
