Lots of different opinions here. What is considered to be good instruction is subjective. A parent with Ivy League goals and comfort around making kids miserable and stressed will always say instruction is not on par. When you have a moment, compare MoCo's test scores with a few counties in Mississippi or Alabama. Boy, do we forget how good we have it here.
|
Better yet compare MoCo's test scores to Papua, New Guinea. Wait, I neither live in Mississippi nor New Guinea. These are not comparable groups to Montgomery County. |
THAT.IS.JUST.SILLY.

What a red herring. People on here always say "oh, we have it better than Mississippi or Alabama." Okay, great. There are many many many excellent public school systems throughout this nation with highly educated parents and responsive administrators. I've seen public elementaties in the Chicago suburbs and the Boston suburbs which rival the top privates around here in facilities, student-teacher ratios, academic and enrichment opportunities, and making sure individual children's needs are met. And their academics are top notch. I'm not so sure the same is not true in the better districts in areas outside of New York, Dallas, Seattle, Cleveland, you name it. I know of a fabulous school district outside of Indianapolis, IN, for the love of all that's holy. And I bet you could find some excellent districts in the Deep South, too! I know there are a few in LOuisiana. And some of these places do extremely well with kids who are bright and affluent maybe, but not kids of The Most Educated Parents Anywhere On The Planet! Some of the posters on here are so pretentious, and have no idea what they are talking about. MOCO publics are overrated. |
When half the kids in 4th grade can't spell properly, have terrible spelling and awful handwriting in a "W" school-then it is time to complain. We chose not to live in Alabama and Mississippi for a reason-and expect better! |
| Opps! meant terrible grammar-flame away! |
There is a common assumption among some posters on DCUM that if something is bad in a school in the Whitman/Churchill/Wootton/Walter Johnson cluster, then it must be just as bad, or more likely worse, in all of the MCPS schools that are not in the Whitman/ChurchillWootton/Walter Johnson cluster. I think that this assumption is mistaken. |
Papua, New Guinea, is not in the US. Mississippi is in the US. Compared to many other school systems in the US, we have it awfully good in MCPS. |
| OP here-I expect the school to teach my kid how to spell and use proper grammar. I expect them to teach my kid how to write legibly. I was taught all those things in an inner city NY school comprable to Wheaton. I expect the highly rated "W" school my kid attends to do the same-or perhaps we all should move to Alabama.... |
Well if you are looking at test scores than there is no mistake-it is worse! |
Maybe you should learn how to spell. Apparently your education wasn't as rigorous as you thought. It's "disappointed". |
LOL. You're an ass. Or a troll. Probably both. I'll post my mensa score if you will. |
| With the exception of Poolesville and Sherwood. |
I'd also love to find a cluster without asshole parents. |
I tried but there isn't any. |
