For at least 40 years, virginia schools have taught about racism and jim crow and civil rights, and have celebrated civil rights heroes.

We are not doing any favors to black and brown children to teach them that their success or lack thereof is out of their hands, that they lack agency.

We are not doing any favors to all our grandchildren, teaching them that wealth that this country built, which has fought fascism and communist totalitarianism, which has raised billions out of poverty around the world, is only due to historical slavery and conquest.

We can teach the injustice of slavery, and we can teach the underhanded history of broken indian treaties.

However, most of the wealth created in this country has been due to free land and thus high wages and opportunity (often by displacing neolithic indigenous cultures, true!) and meritocracy (for an ever-increasingly inclusive group of peoples).

CRT, focusing on race, and replacing meritocracy with committee-dispensed equity, winds up either in a race war or in mass, centrally-planned starvation & incarceration.

+1 nice to see a well reasoned post from a student of history

More like a well fabricated narrative of history. The wealth of this country was built on free labor by those who were raped, separated from their families (including babies), still being killed, and were forced into bondage for hundreds of years. We aren’t doing the people of this nation any favors denying the truth and refusing to acknowledge the racism/white supremacy that exists. That just allows it to continue. It has gone on far to long and needs to be addressed immediately.

What immediate actions are you calling for to address it?

First thing you can do is acknowledge the truth. After that, stop discriminating against people based on the color of their skin. It’s really not that difficult. Stop with all the deception.

Done.

Now can we all go home?

This would be great if it were true, however racists/ white supremacists swear they aren’t practicing racism/white supremacy while they are doing just that.

that would take a constitutional amendment- do you think 3/4ths of states are voting to allow reparations?

I was thinking more along the lines of free job training, parenting help, scholarships.

Well of course reparations are due from all the money that was stolen from Black people

But I read a lot people saying that if implemented it will send the message to people of color that they are not capable of achieving great things. I’m confused. How is acknowledging systemic racism going to do this exactly? I can understand all the ways racism may have contributed to X and still hold myself accountable and know I’m capable of doing certain things? I’m a Latina. I was discriminated against in this country growing up. I learned about systemic racism in college. It explained many things I didn’t quite understand before. Never did I say to myself “well shucks I guess I can’t accomplish these things now.” It seems like such a weird argument. It’s also quite patronizing for white people to assume how this may impact people of color.
By the way as a Latina whose country was heavily impacted by American foreign policy “fighting communism” in the 60s, I have to chuckle at the PP. This well reasoned student of history would do well to study the history of American foreign policy.

There is a lot of study on this that says when you victimize people particularly as a whole and not a part it's a self fulfilling prophecy where they believe they are not strong and are forever victims. They basically live out their victimization.

Citation?

I'm sorry. It's the middle of a work day so I'll have to get back to this later but there are thousands I'm sure. Many black people even discuss this experience in their own lives.

Yes, I'm sure you'll get right on it...finding "a lot of studies".

LOL.

So something like affirmative action in school admissions and preferential hiring for government contracts. We've done that and it has had material success. But then we decided that we were done with that and we've moved on to managing feelings. The results have been less impressive.

Reread what you wrote. You told us, parents of elementary school children, what we should do. We should acknowledge truth and we should not discriminate against the particular people at issue, which is Black people. I'll add in brown people too.

Done.

Maybe your immediate actions need more thinking through.

We'll wait.

I think if it's executed well, it's fine. The hard part is it is really rarely done well. My high school did some version of CRT. In reality, there was a ton of making us guilty for who we were through no fault of our own. There was talk about our ancestors and what they did wrong. Except there was no acknowledgement that that's not always true. My ancestors fled the nazis in world War 2. They were not benefitting from any sort of systemic racism. Really, in the end, people were just annoyed and insulted and the overall lesson was lost on us. I'm sure things have changed since then, but I do worry that it won't be done right and just will lead to more divide.

We teach our kids the reason they are privileged. But I'm not going to make them feel guilty for being white and from an UMC family. We are going to show them how their grandfather busted his butt working 3 jobs to get his family out of poverty and the way he did it wasn't because he was white.

Honestly, much of it is in the terminology. People keep using terms like "give up your white privilege" to ask for . . . I don't know what? Turning over my house? Resigning from my job and demanding that a person of color replace me? The same is true with education. Is it a privilege to want your child to have a good education? Why would I give up something that everyone should have?

The term white supremacy is too pejorative and not particularly illuminating. It's not even about skin color so much as the extent to which our society reflects a particular view of what is normal and good to the detriment of people who don't fit those norms. CRT scholars call it "whiteness" but it would be more descriptive and less emotionally charged to talk about the dominant culture carries with it and continually reinforces certain beliefs about what is good, right, valuable, and important and these are perpetuated in laws and institutions in a way that holds people of color back. It's not white supremacy, and some of the values associated with what CRT scholars call white supremacy aren't bad, including emphasis on hard work and education. But the value system carries with it multiple nuanced decisions and judgments we make every day that aren't consistent with these stated values or even true. It's like only hiring graduates from the Ivy leagues. Those school are highly selective, so the graduates must be better, right? If these graduates are the best and most sought after, what's left for everyone else? This belief prevents the genius from a state school from getting the good job he deserves. These cultural values and beliefs manifest themselves through judgments about names, hair, skin color, background, manner of speech and all types of ideas of what is best that aren't intentionally about keeping people of color down as much closing doors to anyone who doesn't display them. We apply values in a way that does not offer fair opportunity to anyone who doesn't satisfy the societal norms, and that's what needs to change.

These important messages could be taught and discussed in a more productive way that does not involve anyone calling anyone who questions CRT teachings a racist or white supremacist.

Yeah, I think we need to go back to this area. Maybe additional mental health help. Parenting help and assistance. Job help. Transporation help. Actual teaching and assistance with skills and needs.

Yes, it's so much better to constantly keep (white) people in a state of disproving a negative. Maybe they'll just give up eventually and give you the keys to all their assets, which is all you really want, to make you leave them alone.

After all, Zimbabwe is such an excellent role model.

All that is good, but what is necessary is a check compensating the free labor, the damages prospering communities destroyed, rape and murder with impunity of men/women/children, separation from babies, torture endured while in bondage and interment camps, etc that has happened to Black people on American soil for over 600 years. That would be a start.

No. A "check" is not needed, is not a start, and couldn't be accurately delivered. You're looking at something that won't help even if we made up some arbitrary and inaccurate determination of who should receive such a check.

If that's the best idea you have, no wonder "CRT" isn't getting anywhere.
