Here’s a PSA for everyone triggered by Meghan’s experience with racism.

Racism manifests itself in different ways in different environments. The most telling thing is that even all the wealth and privilege in the world cannot protect you from it.

Oprah is one of the wealthiest women in the world. Yet, even she was kicked out of a high end store in Paris because of her skin color.

Meghan Markle is literally a princess and she still had to deal with racist press. The most egregious was the BBC comparing her newborn to a monkey.

These experiences are relevant because success, wealth and power are often considered the solution to fighting racism. This underscores the need for greater societal change.

+1.

Thank god you guys are fighting for poor Oprah’s rights. You’re real difference makers.

Let me spell it out for you:

Oprah was the richest person in the entire city of Paris and she was kicked out of a store for being black. When she spoke out it shone a light on the treatment of black people in Paris. There are often many excuses for racist behavior and excluding black people from white spaces. Oprah’s experience destroys each and every one of those “plausible” justifications.

I’m happy that she was able to draw attention to widespread discrimination in the same way I’m happy Meghan was able to call out the British press for racism. They both used their position and power to force attention on racist practices. Their privilege and power means they cannot be ignored.

Sadly, no one can prevent all discrimination. I’m a woman, so I understand that I will be sexually harassed when I leave my house. But I don’t whine about it constantly. What would be the point?

I’m sorry that you view being vocal about sexually harassment as “whining”. It’s not. It’s a violation of your civil rights.

Maybe if you saw more value in your own civil rights you would be able to value the rights of others.

And that’s why I should be raped, right? Maybe it will teach me a lesson?

Meghan stans are just as classless as their idol.

The BRF did speak up for Meghan. They put forward statements for her.

Beyond that, the usual way that they address problems is with silence. They gave her the same courtesy they give to other members of the family - by being above the media.

You didn't notice any of this...

DP: Yes, silence has often been effective in the face of racism. At least that’s what some people like to claim. /s

DP. In the past few years, Meghan has become enormously powerful, wealthy, and influential. If she’s been suffering from vicious racism this whole time, then lots of us will want to volunteer for some racial discrimination.

It minimizes actual racism when people pretend Meghan has been suffering from immense racism. Many people have experienced serious racism, but their lives don’t look a lot like Meghan’s.

I know you are smart enough to know that does not insulate a person fully from racism. Oprah is also very wealthy and influential, but that did not prevent ugly racism from rearing its nasty head against her in many directions. She has opined about it, and most people know about the Hermes incident. Clarence Thomas spoke at the National Bar Association many years ago, wherein he spoke of being pulled over several times for "driving while Black". Nothing has stopped the nasty, disgusting pictures and statements comparing Michelle Obama to an ape or horse. Let's not mention the extra security the SS had and has to provide to Barack simply because of the threats he receives due to his race. I won't even try to address your immense racism comment. It's like if you a person does not experience "for whites only", lynching, physical acts, etc. then racism is not so bad and no need to complain. You are wrong, every little knick and cut adds up and it is tiring, frustrating, exhausting and depressing.

This is like saying all the Hollywood actresses harassed by Jeffery Epstein didn’t actually experience misogyny because they’re rich and famous.

Gwenyth Paltrow is extremely wealthy. Same for Alyssa Milano.

Do you think it minimizes the fight for women’s rights when they complains about their treatment?

Abd if you’re supportive of wealthy, powerful white women speaking out against harassment, then you may need to reconsider why you find it so offensive for a wealthy, privileged black woman to speak out against racism. Your visceral reaction that she should know her place is exactly why her voice is needed.

I wrote the bolded and you responded to me. I think we are saying the same thing, so I do not know why you responded to me the way you did. Maybe you said it much better than I, but we agree.

But they’ve cut extremely lucrative deals since then. Why would he still need to mooch off Pop?

I agree. When you’re an adult and enjoy so much wealth and privilege, why would you still whine about pops not giving you money?

I did not take it as a whine, but a simple statement of fact. He is also letting those like yourself understand that the reason he is making such lucrative deals is because he no longer have the financial support of the crown and must make money, by any means necessary to take care of his family.

Then he should be thanking them for making him so rich.

Uh Camilla regularly was compared to a horse. And lots people dont like Obama because of his policies. You can dislike people for reasons other than race ya know.

Nice how you cherry-picked one thing and disregarded the rest. Please tell me, was Camilla constantly compared to orangutans, gorillas, monkeys and apes. So you are saying that it was okay that Obama received so many death threats because people did not like his policies. Do you really think everybody loved Trump's or Bush's policies? Fucck NO! Yet, they did not receive half the credible death threats from the the presidents that came before and after him. What's the common denominator. Maybe you are not that smart after all.

Now I’m supposed feel sorry for Oprah because she’s supposedly a victim of racism? That’s gonna be a no from me.

Oprah is among the most privileged people in the world. God love her! She’s earned it.

Nobody asked you to feel sorry for Oprah or anyone else. The point is that money does not insulate a person from being on the receiving end of racism. Just like money does not insulate a person from the receiving end of sexism.

I want the kind of racism that Oprah and Meghan have. They are rich beyond belief and have time to complain behind their castle walls!

Only a white person who has never experienced racism would say some stupid shit like this. Would you say the same thing about a rich Jewish person who ihas to deal with anti-semitism all the time. Or a rich, gay man who is subjected to homophobic altercations, incidences, and slurs on a regular. Black people are the only people in this country who are constantly told to be appreciative that they are not living and thriving in the slums.

Except for what Harry inherited from his mother and except for the amount Meghan had made with her career.

DP. You’re wrong. Money does indeed insulate a person from discrimination. Do you really believe rich people experience as much discrimination as poor people? That’s just silly.

Why was my post about British press printing that the public and they secretly liked Prince Phillips' racist quips deleted?
It is relevant to this topic too.

Spoken like someone who has never experienced racism.

Not really. I went to a majority black public school where I lettered in four sports. Lots of experience with discrimination based on race.

What’s yours? Sounds like you’re an expert!

The HORROR! SMH. And when you left class, you walked out the school door with all your privileges in tact. How many times did yu get pulled over simply because you drove a nice car; followed in the store; pulled out the car and placed in the prone position; told you that you were not the company fit although you were more than qualified for the position; told that yu did not sound like the TYPICAL Black person; told that you were an anomaly and a credit to your race; redlined for a mortgaged; told that an apartment was available but when you showed up in person was told that it was already rented out when it really was not; steered toward prime mortgages, etc.

Diana was a princess. Her money is BRF money. Meghan did make a bit of money from acting, but they’ve long since burned through whatever amount she made. (It wasn’t Montecito mansion money; let’s put it that way.)

And the obsession and emulation (for some) begins...Y'all are comical. Lol

Slavery? Really?

The envy of some white women towards black women who are the object of a white man's desire. Yes, really.

You sound kinda racist tbh. I would suggest you try not to view everything in life through the prism of race. That’s what racists do.

Not PP but with respect to what she(?) is saying about slavery has been extensively researched and published. There was very, very widespread rape of enslaved African woman during slavery that, at least in the south, continued until maybe the 1950s (because black women couldn’t exactly expect a jury of their peers).

Feel free to start a thread about enslaved African women if you’d like. I don’t think it’s particularly relevant to the plight of an incredibly privileged and enormously wealthy, white-passing Hollywood starlet. But I’m sure Meghan, who enjoys nothing more than to embrace a narrative of victimhood for herself, would love the comparison!

Wow.

Every single female member of parliament from all parties agreed that Meghan was being attacked in racist and colonial undertones. Every female member of Parliament called out the racism she was facing.

That’s a polite way of describing what PP wrote. Your insistence that these colonial undertones are okay is part of the problem.

Meghan's problem is that she's American. Yes, being biracial gave the tabloids an easy target to use against her. If she were white, they would have used something else.

If you don't understand the prejudice against Americans/non-Brits, then you don't know any Brits.

I agree with this. Unpopular opinion but she doesn't look black, and the press jumped all over her relationship with her mother who - surprise! - does. Perfect fodder. The whole thing is baiting people to scream racism and it's working.

She may not look Black to White people, but she definitely does not look like your typical white woman to POC who are use to MGM and bi-racial people in their communities. For those white people who thought MM was a typical, white American woman, the media made it a point to let you know she was not one of you. The first thing the British newspapers printed was she was a Blackish woman straight out of Compton. That was the code.

IOW, you don't know any Brits.

Does my cousin and her Pakistani-British born husband count? Your deflection is horrible.
