Stop the FCV (DA) and McLean (ECNL) hate

What do people think of the Mclean commitment list? Few ECNL/DA clubs across the nation can match or exceed.

Two questions:

So ... do you go with the better coaching staff or the better players? MU’s staff is better while FCV’s players are better. Which team should your daughter choose and why?

Also, if FCV, do you throw your morals out the window and let your kid play for a staff of self-interested jerks or guide her to play for a team that has players that are good, but not as good and coaches that are better, and/or at least better humans?

Congratulations to those girls. This is an example of a super team formed when there were only 2 club options for top level soccer in the area. The talent used to be very concentrated. For the younger girls the talent is spread across 6-7 DA/ECNL teams.

Depends on fit. If FCV coaching staff treats your DD well, then I don't see the issue. If she can get equal or more playing time at FCV then I don't see the issue. If the FCV coaches are complete jerks, you have to weight that with the quality of the training. The MRM Rush and current Bethesday 05 ECNL coach is rough as well but parents still sign up.

No question. Go with the better coaching staff. Pick the club with the better environment with the better staff. You risk your DD's love for the game if you let her play for jerks. Players are a product of the environment and coaching. Jerk coaches produce self-interested bullies who only care about the score.

I get the feeling FCV is hanging on to glory days of when they (and MYS) were the only option for talent. The younger your DD, the more likely FCV is not that much better than alternatives anyway.

Your point is valid but I argue that even so, more girls have access to more of these teams. The talent is not actually diluted but accreted. For example, girls who lived in places that did not have access to ECNL team and were forced to play for an independent club, might now have access to ECNL/DA and can take advantage of that opportunity. Think of kids in places like Frederick that can reach Loudoun (ECNL) or FCV (DA) in 30-40 minutes. If you live in Herndon, Chantilly or Vienna and were a start for one of those clubs, you have multiple options. So I think the dilution will take place at the non-ECNL/DA clubs. Players at SAC or Ellicott City now have three ECNL/DA clubs that are accessible to them. It starts to happen at u15/u16 as player start committing themselves to the college recruitment process.

FCV is better in coaching and players. Not even close. And this isn’t a knock on George or Spencer, but FCV coaching is on another level.

A factor to consider here is where would these girls have gone to school without soccer? Many of them may have gone to same level school for other reasons (academics or connections of parents or their private high schools). McLean soccer is full of very well connected families and many of these families have many college options for their kids regardless of sports. Point being that lists like these don’t always tell the whole story especially when the application is very strong in other facets than sports.

Not true at all. I know all of these coaches and have had my DD train with all of them many times. FCV coaches are not better than George and Spencer. The training they do are very similar between the clubs. All do rondos for warms up including keep away, free play with Pugg goals and small sided, small field games to handle pressure situations. The way they handle players is the biggest difference. George and Spencer are more player's coaches and create a more friendly and supportive environment but can still be tough on the kids when needed. The two are both former players and at times join the players on the field. Bobby P is more of a sideline coach and administrator overseeing the sessions. Gus D is a former player will who will sometimes join the field to demonstrate but also is a sideline coach.

Bobby P probably does a better job of promoting his club (social media, connections to USSF staff, etc). If that's what you mean by another level then fine but from a pure coaching standpoint the clubs are very similar.

This is not Varsity Blues. UNC, UVA, Georgetown, Princeton and Wisconsin do not recruit you unless you can help them win an NCAA title. If Obama's daughter couldn't get on Harvard or Princeton's team no matter how strong the Obama connections are. At this level, you need to be a stand out player. Obviously, academic institutions like Harvard, Columbia and Princeton require strong academics but connections only go so far. Playing and standing out on an elite ECNL team is the main driver. This is not about going to school. This is about going to school and playing for an elite NCAA DI team that will compete for the championship.

If you’ve had your kid trained by the FCV coaches, you’d know that what you described is not how FCV typically trains. But you already knew that.

I never said anything about typical training. Both clubs vary their training. All of those are techniques they use. If you deny that then you don't know either club.

Let's all attend an FCV training session and watch Bobby P demonstrate his mad skills with the soccer ball...

Question: Why does anyone think that MU is a hot topic? They are not even players in the game. They only get attention on this board because of the constant promotion by their posters who are attempting to recruit and rip apart other teams in hope of acquiring talent. Other posters know this as well.

Secret: The only way to get talent is to have good result. Winning is the best recruiting tool.
