What do Atheists believe?

History is full of accounts of long ago words and events.

Literally every history book written now is written by people who never spoke to the people they are writing about, or weren’t at the event they are writing about.

Yeah, but I'm not building my entire belief system around something Genghis Khan may or may not have actually said and heck there are actual documents written by people who met Genghis. No such for Jesus. The whole Jesus thing is no more or less legit than the creation stories of the native peoples. Do what you want with it. Believe what you want but no body knows what Jesus 'really' said or thought.

Buddha?

Gautama Buddha[note 3] (c. 563/480 – c. 483/400 BCE), also known as Siddh?rtha Gautama,[note 4] Shakyamuni Buddha,[4][note 5] or simply the Buddha, after the title of Buddha, was an ascetic (?rama?a) and sage,[4] on whose teachings Buddhism was founded.[5] He is believed to have lived and taught mostly in the eastern part of ancient India sometime between the 6th and 4th centuries BCE.[6][note 6]

Who ever spoke to this dude?

If you genuinely believe this, then know you are the source of the problem, and you (and those like you) are the answer to the question "why don't atheists just be quiet about it".

Atheists don’t have to be quiet. They just can’t assume their beliefs are “factual.”

There’s no book anywhere that proves God doesn’t exist.

They just have examined their thoughts and chosen not to believe in Him.

Atheism is lack of belief, not that no god can exist, so it can't be "factual" in the way you state.

Also, it is not "their thoughts" that have been examined, it is the evidence, or specifically, the lack thereof.

So as an atheist you believe it’s not that God doesn’t exist; you just don’t believe?

Not just me, but nearly all atheists.

You'll meet very few who claim the otherwise, because everyone knows you can't prove a negative (that something doesn't exist). Same with alien life, leprechauns, or alternate universes.

Many say it is highly unlikely, as I do, as there is no evidence. But it would be hypocritical to say you knew with metaphysical certitude that there was no god.

Ok, so Atheists believe God may or may not exist.

But they have no belief in God or any God.

Is that correct?

Second sentence is, first is not.

Atheists don't believe in a god or gods. End period. Position on first question may have nuance but no atheist can offer absolute proof there are no gods.

So Atheists don’t have proof there’s no God.

For like the infinity-1th time, correct.

Okey Doke.

You cannot prove a negative. Therefore the existence of God is as likely as that of a unicorn and Bigfoot. Thus God should be considered on par with all the things that people like but no one has any evidence of. Belief in God should not be any more special.

I am super excited an atheist finally admitted that they choose not to believe, and have no evidence God doesn’t exist.

I don’t know anyone who believes there are unicorns, btw. Or Bigfoot.

There are narwhals and gorillas though- sorta close.

I don’t believe in gods but I do believe in unicorns.

Don't be so excited. Any atheist would say the same. I'm shocked you didn't know this or think it's some kind of big admission. It suggests you've been taught incorrect information about atheists.

Atheists don't believe in God, Unicorns and Bigfoot for the same reason -- there is no evidence for any of them. To atheists, they are all the same. Religious believers, however make a distinction. They believe in God, but not in Unicorns or Bigfoot, despite the lack of evidence for all three.

+1 I have to agree with this poster. If you think this is some kind of revelation, you have been grossly misinformed. Nearly no atheist has ever claimed absolute knowledge on god's non-existence, as absolute knowledge of something not-existing is no possible. This includes the famous guys like Dawkins and Hitchens. They say it is "highly unlikely" as there is no evidence.

You should meet more of us atheists. You'd be surprised!
