And that's been true since most of us were kids. Not condoning it by any means, but where do the adults on this board come from that teens going to parties with alcohol is a foreign concept? I've lived on three continents and high school kids drinking at private homes is nothing new.

Where but here do teens drink and drive?

I also have lived internationally, and I know of no other culture were parents routinely permit their drinking teens to have the car keys to get home after a party.

So what do other countries do?

Depends on their options.
What will you do, is the question.

Public transit, sleeping over at host's home, taxi.

I asked that sincerely. Thanks for a useless response.

Does the above post offer you some ideas, PP?

Have the parents been named or charged yet? This is ridiculous

I haven't heard who the parents are that hosted the party, but I have heard that it is widely known in the Wooton Community. Based on another DUI case involving death of a passenger that I followed, it probably isn't ridiculous that driver was indicted in that case.

In that case, the driver was indicated 7 months after the accident.

How long do toxicology tests take? I guess they need to know just how drunk the four in the car were, and if there were any other drugs.

But for the two survivors, wouldn't they know almost immediately, certainly within a few hours?

I am thinking there was a charge on Friday. You can no longer access his name under the search Maryland court records link- it's protected now. Based on his age, and the fact that the two other kids in the car were killed, I think it's appropriate to keep the story out of the media. I have faith that the attorneys, judges and police will find a balance of justice vs. compassion.

I am thinking whatever happened last Friday was in relationship to his previous criminal activity, not the latest incident that resulted in the deaths of two of his passengers.

Also, he's no longer just a juvenile offender, since he turned 18 last year.

Agreed. Two kids were killed. It will be news when/if the driver is charged. As PP stated, he is now an adult - if this were some random kid from Southeast DC would you be talking about the appropriateness of keeping the story out of the media and finding a balance of justice v. compassion? Absurd.

God this is all so f*cking sad. Needlessly tragic, like any drunk driving or reckless driving accident.

FWIW, I am actually in favor of a lowered legal drinking age, but that wouldn't solve the problem. The driving part, that's the key to solving and I think (anecdotally) we are moving the right direction in say the last 40-50 years (I'd be interested to find the stats on teens in drunk driving accidents specifically) but any death is too much pain- which you can read in this thread. The outrage is not really different than the sadness, its all from a place of pain.

I just searched and his two adult citations are still there. What else is there?

Was the address of the host party ever published by the media?

Exactly. If Ellis doesn't do jail time just like any black 18 year old would, the riots may come to Potomac.

They won't regardless.

I have faith that his lawyers will get him the least amount of jail time. Personally, I find the kids who died equally culpable in their fate. Not that they deserved to die, but that they should have known better.

Let's not get silly here. Sure, the passengers weren't too bright when drinking, but no, they are in no way as equally culpable as the drinking driver who smashed the car.

The craziest thing is the parents who allow their partying kids to get around on their own. And of course the parents who allow these parties.
