Eh, I voted Dem up until this election. I’m sick of the leftist school board and my compassion well has run dry. It’s been used up on all the F’ing equity bs.

You’re talking about detaining and deporting children from the only homes they’ve known. Respectfully, I don’t think this was a particularly deep well at the outset.

Nah, they can all go together.

Yeah? We can deport U.S. citizens with their non-citizen family members? What a great insight into the depths of your “compassion”

If the parents committed the crime of entering illegally and have a child who is a citizen, the compassionate thing to do is to pay for the child to be transported with the parents and keep the family together.

Americans who commit crimes go to jail, whether they have children or not and no one cries about "don't separate the family!"

In the case that their citizen children have other family who are citizens willing to care for them, that is an option the parents can use. That's what happens to Americans. They commit crimes and their children go to aunt, grandpa, or cousin if both parents are jailed. We don't allow them to remain free and untouched because they have children.

And if the children aren’t legal citizens of the first country, having been born in the United States? You think the U.S. should pay for individuals to commit crimes?

Look, when you guys were talking about people committing crimes, I had sympathy for your views. If you were talking about the appalling conditions in meat packing factories which are allowed to persist because undocumented workers don’t have recourse to complain about them, I’d think you had a really good point.

But you’re talking about ripping kids out of classrooms and putting them in detention centers. I hope your children are proud of you.

We're not making that choice. The parents made that choice when they came here. They can return to their home country at any time and attempt return legally.

See this is MAGA~no empathy, no kindness...just a lot of hate and greed. Jesus would be so proud

What greed? What hate?

Expecting laws to be followed is showing lack of empathy? You sound unhinged.

Expecting infants or toddlers to “obey laws” is what’s unhinged. That’s who is in schools with your kids now. Not people who knowingly broke any laws coming here. That’s who you’re being asked to show empathy for.

We can be empathetic, but we don’t need to reward the parents for illegal behavior because they have children. They can be deported with the parents.

You can? There’s no evidence of it here. You don’t want to target criminals, agribusinesses, not even gangs. This thread is about wanting people who had no say in coming here dragged out of your child’s classrooms and detained and deported. Truly I hope you’re either a bot or deeply ashamed.

DP. What? That's exactly what we all want - anyone with a shred of common sense, that is. What are you even talking about?

Here you are on the **Fairfax County Public Schools** board talking about the impact on test scores and teacher attention of taking kids out of their classrooms and throwing them in detention centers.

You want to target illegal immigration? Your perpetrators are Tyson’s and Purude, who not only employ undocumented workers, let children as young as 13 work in conditions so bad they result in the loss of limbs, which of course is totally illegal but what is an undocumented kid supposed to say about it.

But I bet you would be thrilled to have the CEO of Tyson’s invite your kid over.

You must be unaware of the gangs that have infiltrated Fairfax county and surrounding areas.

But here you are arguing to keep them here because they procreated.

I’ve lived in Fairfax under three presidents and every time heard how there’s a horrible gang problem and never once heard a suggestion that deporting children would help.

So you are suggesting that we separate the American born children of these gang members from their parents? Or should they stay together in the parents home country? Won't our kids shun us for ripping their friends out of the classroom??

Maybe the immediate post is partly in jest.. But no, your kids won't "shun" you. Perhaps you could use it as a teaching moment to encourage your own kids to know and obey the laws they live under. Put another way: the American-born children of these 'gang members" should not be used as anchor babies to keep their criminal parents in our country. They could bring their kids to their own country, which might be better for all concerned. If they go to jail for their crimes here, we end up paying for both the incarceration of the parents and the basic needs of the children. By the way, children of US-born criminals get separated from their parents too; it's an unfortunate part of the criminal lifestyle.

Don’t kid yourself. If large-scale mass deportation did happen (and it won’t because the people benefiting from undocumented workers are wealthy donors not MC suburban internet warriors) it would be a generational event and the children of those who supported it would view their parents the way children looked at parents who participated in other atrocities.

Chamber of Commerce propaganda. American men will work in construction.

They don’t now. Why do you think that’s likely to change?

Americans have been blocked from employment in construction for a long time in favor of immigrants. And then they turn around and cry about losing a chunk of their workforce if there are immigration raids. Cry harder. They have put this narrative out for years while being the main manipulators behind the scenes to make it so that illegal immigrants make up a significant part of the workforce.

"The high rates of displacement and discouragement stem from a history of union racism and contractor preference for immigrants. As such, the racial demographic in the construction industry is now 60 percent white, 30 percent Hispanic, and 5 percent Black American, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics."

That doesn’t at all answer the question of why American men don’t presently work in construction. 4% of men over 20 are unemployed— what keeps them from working construction?

Most Americans aren’t fit enough for jobs requiring physical labor. My ex is Hispanic and works with horses as a groom. He always laughed when his employers hired a non-Hispanic as a groom. Most didn’t last a week. The job is physically taxing and the hours are long. Americans couldn’t hack it.

We expect the parents to obey the laws dingbat. If you're here illegally, better get your affairs in order. The gravy train is shutting down.

The gravy train is that is that being run by rich white people. Shut that down, and you shut down the reason for illegals to come to this country, because there is not enough work otherwise. Make it a felony with a 10 year prison sentence to employ illegal immigrants, and actually enforce it by sending a bunch of rich white people to prison, and employment opportunities for illegal immigrants will dry up quick.

DP. I'd be perfectly fine with that. Liberal families are the biggest employers of illegal immigrants - nannies, housekeepers, landscapers, etc.

No, they’re not. The government assessed that half of all farm workers were undocumented and about 15% of all construction workers.

I’m sorry you’re struggling to afford help at home but this isn’t going to stick it to your more fortunate neighbors.

This is such a stupid argument. Fairfax County, which has solidly been voting for Democrats for a very long time, has a ton of illegal immigrants. What farms are they working on and sending their kids to FCPS? What chicken plants are they working in and sending their kids to h
FCPS? Our illegal immigrant neighbors around here are most certainly working as nannies, housekeepers, and landscapers, hired by solid blue voters in Fairfax County. That is true all over the DMV but since we're just talking FCPS, I'll leave it there.

In Fairfax I imagine the largest employer is construction, and the disincentive to cracking down has been our historically high housing costs.

Well your imagination isn't really reliable as a source of data. Do you have a link to share that show construction is where they work.

Our housing costs are high because we live next to the biggest employer in the US.

It’s a figure of speech. The federal government estimates that 15% of the construction workers country-wide are undocumented. Given the amount of construction in this area it’s a logical connection to who is employing undocumented workers.

No, you said most here illegally in Fairfax work construction. Where is the data for that? Both state and local governments require anyone here to be legally eligible to work. Let's see your data for Fairfax.

Your argument seems to be that Fairfax is special and undocumented workers here work in different industries than the rest of the country? Highly unlikely. As others have stated we don’t have significant agricultural, we do have significant construction, and there’s where the data is.

This definitely won't happen.

+ 1 Also, I would have a much harder time explaining to my kids if one of them was criminally victimized by an undocumented immigrant. https://www.nbcnews.com/investigations/13000-immigrants-convicted-homicide-living-freely-us-ice-data-rcna173125. That's would be tough.

As to the rest, we can explain why people here illegally to begin with went home (or were deported if it comes to that). Not sure why so many on DCUM are on the aide of the rule breakers. We have a country; it needs a secure border. We have labor needs; we need to have problems to meet those as well, but lawfully. I don't disagree with those who believe employers should be on the hook as well, but sometimes immigrants present fake documents.

"high rates of displacement and discouragement "

So…their hurt feelings? You’re telling me American men are all just too… discouraged to work in construction? I’m sorry I don’t buy that for a second.

No, I means Americans are/were actively blocked from employment in construction which you'd know if you read the linked article and cited EEOC report.

It’s definitely a Reddit/internet position. Posters seem to be overwhelmingly pro- illegal immigration.

Most people want a secure border. I have no issues deporting illegal immigrants. If I decided to stay over illegally in say, France, I also wouldn’t be surprised or cry Hitler if France kicked me out. What if 20 million Americans decided to overstay tourist visas in France or enter the country illegally? Would you insist we should be allowed to stay?

I think some people are against anything and everything Trump supports. The problem is they are often against something but not for anything else, which is why they lost the election.
