Nice try

Well, that’s an opportunity for some kids. It’s a great school, no matter where it ranks.

The ratings are now of lesser value to the people who obsess about them the most. Who are presumably the most likely to buy whatever US News is selling. (Extra data, etc.) Some editor is now quite proud to have bettered the social good, but in the long run this will hurt the brand.

I'm sorry your kid's school fell in the rankings!

It will as the swell to get of legacy admissions continues.

LOL just like every other elite top 20. It's not going anywhere below where it is. It hasn't for decades. I know that triggers you lol.

It literally dropped 2 spots to 20, it can easily drop another next year.

I can see ND falling out of the top 20 next year.

Yes, likely.

Yup you guys keep saying that every year, yet ND has been in top 20s since the 90s despite being a Catholic University and a student body that is predominantly Catholic and White. What else could USNWR do to drop them lower? They already changed the metrics to be out of their favor this year significantly, but here we are...still in the top 20.

ND will rise next year. USNWR is basing a lot of the weight on diversity of graduating students. Their diversity has improved significantly and they continue to work on this. I don't see it droping much lower than its current standing.

These metrics take y years to show up on the rankings, as us news uses 6 year grad rates. So no not much ND can improve on.

So what? If ND is improving yearly, they will improve gradually. They certainly won’t decline.

the vast majority of people in this country are not wealthy, so the ranking makes more sense to the vast majority of people in this country.

I realize that the wealthy prefer to have their own biased wealthy colleges at the top rankings, though. Maybe you ought to get Town & Country magazine to create a list just for the rich people.

Only wealthy people care about academic factors? Good to know.

Being able to graduate college and increase social mobility is more important to people who are not wealthy, which is the vast majority of people in this country.

Only wealthy people who can buy their way into expensive colleges via ED, college counselors and activities care about the "eliteness" of a college. So yea, go call Town & Country.

Except when increasing social mobility is almost entirely a function of who they let in and not of the education provided to the students once they are admitted. The public schools attract more lower income students, that is pretty much the sole reason for their improvement as a group this year.

However, top publics were dinged hard for decades due to heavy weights based on money. About time - you shoudn't be able to 'buy' higher rankings with money.

If you look at the top 14 schools, these are the richest schools based on the size of their endowments. There is no way US News doesn't reward these schools because of their wealth. They bought these higher rankings indeed!

So this new ranking works best for the poor - and that's fine. I'll bet that many (if not most) on DCUM don't fit that category though.

It works for more than just the "poor". Lots of middle/umc families cannot afford these crazy expensive colleges. These are the donut whole families.

The vast majority of college students are not wealthy, so again, this ranking list works for the vast majority of people in this country. DCUM crowd is not a reflection of this country.

24 < 25

Did you take any math classes in your life?

Anonymous wrote:It is noticeable that all the top publics went up in rankings except for one. Only UVA went down and out of top 25. Wonder why?

No. It’s at 24.

I thought UVA was at 26?

It is at 26. Went from 25 to 26.

No, UVA went from 25 to 24. OP neglected to post it. Here. https://www.usnews.com/best-colleges/rankings/national-universities

sure, and that's why I stated that maybe the elitist wealthy dcum crowd should ask Town & Country to create a list for them.

USNWR is not just for the wealthy dcum crowd.

UCLA and Cal charge roughly $20K less per year than most of the top 25 privates. My DD is at UCLA and her tuition is lower than the DC private school that she graduated from!

What is her tuition/room&board for out of state with no financial aid?

$43,3733

Town and Country does a list based on ROI and Harvard is not top, Maybe Architectural Digest or Cigar Afficionado?

UVA is mUCh bEtTer.

SAT: UMich 1435 vs. UVA 1430
Go Blue!

Source: prepmatters

Scores are meaningless. Pretty much every kid I know did not send scores to UMich. and got in based on inflated GPA alone.

That’s funny. It’s a well known fact that Michigan recalculates all GPAs. You don’t get extra credit for inflated scores.

UVA is a public ivy and Michigan is a safety for public ivy.

? according to whom?

I keep hearing that SAT scores are really meaningless and that's why so many colleges are going TO, so what does it matter that one college has higher SAT scores than the other? It's self selecting. BTW, my kid had a 1580 on their SATs.

The acceptance rate is based on the number of people applying there, correct? If more people apply to UVA only because more kids in VA go to college compared to MI, then the acceptance rate doesn't really matter much.

Michigan gets more applications than UVA but is much easier to get into as an instate student.

Yes, but Michigan is almost three times the size of UVA at 51,275 students

Anonymous wrote:Honestly, and perhaps this is an unpopular opinion, this is the most “accurate” ranking of colleges I’ve seen, perhaps ever, from US News.

I agree one thousand percent. It’s just too unnerving to the private high school / private college crowd because it is so contrary to their world view. I’ve always said you’re crazy to throw so much money away on second tier privates over top public colleges. This is more proof of that. UVA, UMD, Tech, the UC schools, UNC, the Big Ten schools, etc are clearly better than all of the bullshit $80k year privates that so many on DCUM have convinced themselves are educational necessities.

Some kids can't handle those huge classes and some families' are blessed to be able to pay that 80k with no problems. Most of these publics don't give any aid to out of state students and privates do. My DC was able to get aid from a T25 and we pay lees than UMCP.

Congrats for the most ridiculous comment of the day thus far!

Well, Michigan does take 50% OOS, so it "could" be true . . .
