Edge of Fairfax County with the only major artery being hwy 29? No traffic issues there.

Right off a main road seems ideal for a large high school. The real issue would be that its not in a densely populsted area and is farther away from the overcrowded areas. But nearby elementaries could handle the excess capscity if they turned it into a HS

Yes. By all means put a high school on one of the busiest and most backed up roads at rush hour in FFX County. A location that has no other access. This is not a "road"--this section is pretty close to being a limited access highway. Listen to the traffic reports in the morning. It is very close to I66. Listen for Highway 28--just east of I 66

Is it more appropriate to site a HS in a residential neighborhood off small streets? What do you think is better?

It is route 29. 28 is centreville road and not close by. They just upgraded the intersections in the area for the 66 construction.

A residential neighborhood is a great place for elementary schools but a terrible place for a high school.

High schools bring with them a gone of traffic, student drivers, hundreds of staff, not just during the school day but also football games, track meets, musicals, concerts, etc.

A high school in a neighborhood only works if it is an enormous plot of land with ample parking, like Lake Braddock or Robinson.

OOPs. Thought I was replying to the suggestion of using the fields on HWY 28 by Ellanor Lawrence Park. But, I don't see how Bull Run would be a good location either since all the traffic would be coming from one direction.

You clearly don't live in the area. If you look at a map, there are several access roads in different directions to the Bull Run site. The Compton road route would probably need some upgrades as it is narrow and windy but buses use it all the time for the ES. There would also be some traffic coming from Bull Run Post Office Road heading east to the school, and Pleasant Valley Road heading towards the school (this neighborhood could have walkers if there was a crossing guard in front of the school.)

Then pp's suggestion of locating the school at Ellanor Lawrence park near all three of those schools makes logical sense. There is no perfect location (except maybe the land given away to the Saudis---can the county get that back through eminent domain?)

Have you been to that area? It makes no sense.

Specifically, why not? Alleged terrain issues can be fixed by *science*. There is tons of park land in that area, so losing some of this park is fine. The park is absolutely enormous and right on a major road, route 28.

I think most of these posts are by Chantilly parent who wants the new school far away so they wont' get rezoned.

Agree. As a parent zoned to CVHS, I would be happier for my kid to attend a new school than a 3000 kid monstrosity. Some people have their own personal reasons for not wanting a new school built.

More than one Chantilly person posting--I think--likely a Westfield parent. Look at a map.

And the Langley parents in the Forestville/Great Falls area.

We are zoned for Westfield and I would be thrilled to send my kids to a shiny new HS at the BRES location or ECL.

Why would parents of kids who go to LANGLEY be so invested in where a new high school needed for kids in Centreville should go? I don't know or care where anything in that part of the county is.

Oh, my sweet summer child.
Reasonable school capacity in Centreville creates excess capacity in the western HS area, which could pull their kids out of Langley and send them, very reasonably, to Herndon. They have their cake and don't care about any other kids.

Bingo. And the goal isto create noise and objections to any site in the western part of the county, so there could never be any domino effect that might result in kids traveling 10+ miles to Langley traveling less than half that distance to Herndon.

Although PP is right. There are also some people at Chantilly who’d prefer a 3000-student high school with 15-20% FARMS to a 2100-student school with a higher FARMS rate.
